Abstract
A drinks container especially for use when pursuing sports comprises a closure having a drinking outlet 24 which is closed by a tubular valve member 17 that surrounds an upstanding atomising nozzle 27. In use, water can be drunk from the container in the normal way by opening the valve member 17. Alternatively, water can be dispensed from the container via the atomising nozzle 27, which forms a cooling or refreshing spray.
Description
Bottle Closure This invention relates to a closure for a bottle.
Bottle closures are known which comprise a valve member that can be opened to allow a person to drink from the bottle through a mouthpiece on the closure. The closure can then be closed to re-seal the bottle.
Bottle closures of the above-mentioned type are often used by sportsmen or sportswomen because they are easy to open and are easy to drink from whilst pursuing a sporting activity. Following consumption, the bottle can be re-sealed for later consumption.
Persons such as sportsmen and sportswomen often need to cool down in hot weather or whilst pursuing sporting activities and it is well known for them to pour water over themselves from a drinking bottle. It will be appreciated that this is wasteful and that it is difficult to control the amount of water used.
I have now devised a closure for a bottle or other container which alleviates the above-mentioned problems.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a closure for a bottle or other container, the closure comprising means for engaging the neck of the bottle or container, a drinking outlet, a valve member for opening and closing the drinking outlet, and atomising means for dispensing an atomised spray of liquid from the bottle or container.
In use, a person can open the valve member to drink from a bottle or container in the normal way. However, in order to cool down, the user can dispense a controlled fine spray of the liquid over themselves using the atomiser. In this manner, less liquid is wasted, yet a more cooling and refreshing spray is produced.
Preferably the closure comprises said drinking outlet and a further outlet, said atomising means being connected to said further outlet.
The further outlet maybe connected to an elongate duct arranged to extend into the bottle or other container, so that a person can use the atomiser without having to invert the bottle or other container.
Preferably the atomiser comprises means for adjusting the spray therefrom.
Preferably the adjustment means is adjustable by rotation of an adjustment member.
Preferably the valve member is tubular and defines a mouthpiece, the valve member being displaceable axially of itself between an open and closed position, said drinking outlet extending through the valve member.
Preferably the valve member surrounds said atomising means, the atomising means extending axially of the valve member, said drinking outlet preferably extending between an inner side wall of the valve member and an outer side wall of said atomising means.
Preferably the closure comprises a cylindrical body portion to which said tubular valve member is axially mounted, said atomising means comprising a stem which extends from the body through said tubular valve member, said further outlet extending through the stem.
Preferably the closure comprises a cap, which preferably seals said atomiser and which preferably retains said valve member in its closed position.
In use, liquid in the bottle is preferably dispensed from the atomising means by closing the valve member and deforming the wall of the bottle or other container.
Thus, this invention also provides a bottle or other container having a closure as hereinbefore defined and a deformable side wall defining a liquid reservoir.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective side view of a bottle closure in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the other side of the bottle closure of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an exploded view of the bottle closure of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the bottle closure of Figure 1, when the valve member thereof is in its open position; Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the bottle closure of Figure 1, when the valve member thereof is in its closed position; and Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the valve member of Figure 1, when a cap thereof is fitted thereto.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a closure 11 for attaching to a bottle 10 having an externally screw-threaded neck. The closure 11 comprises a one-piece tubular body of moulded plastics material having an internally screw-threaded portion 12 at its lower end for engaging the neck of the bottle 10.
The upper end 14 of the body is of a narrower diameter than the lower end 12 and is connected thereto by a radially-extending shoulder 13. The upper end of the body is closed by an end wall 16.
A tubular valve member 17 defining a mouthpiece is slidably mounted to the upper portion 14 of the body for axial movement relative thereto. The lower end of the valve member 17 comprises an inwardly extending lip 18 which resiliently engages into one of two peripheral grooves 20, 21 formed around the upper portion 14 of the body.
An aperture 22 is formed in the upper end wall of the valve member and an annular flange 23 extends upwardly from the upper end wall 16 of the body through the aperture when the valve member is in its closed position (Figure 5). A plurality of circumferentially-spaced apertures 24 are formed in the end walls 16 of the body around the annular flange 23.
An externally screw-threaded stem 25 also extends upwardly from the upper end wall 16 of the body concentrically inside the flange 23. An internally screw-threaded apertured end cap 23 is attached to the stem 25 and is arranged to retain an atomising nozzle 27 fitted into the upper end of the stem 25. An annular lip 28 is formed around the side of the end cap 26 and engages into a corresponding groove formed around the external surface of the stem 25.
An aperture 29 is formed in the end wall 16 of the body inside the stem 25. A collar depends from the end wall 16 and surrounds the aperture 29.
A lid 31 is provided for fitting to the body of the closure for covering the valve number 17 and end cap 26. The lid 31 is attached via a flexible web 33 to an o ring 32 which is seated in a groove 19 extending around the upper portion 14 of the body of the closure.
Referring to Figure 4 of the drawings, in order to drink from the bottle, the user has to pull the valve number 17 upwardly, for example using their teeth, until the lip 18 on the valve member 17 snap-engages into the upper groove 21, thereby retaining the valve member 17 in situ. Water or other liquid is then able to flow from the bottle 10 through the apertures 24 and out of the aperture 22 in the valve member 17.
Referring to Figure 5 of the drawings, in order to seal the bottle 10, the valve member 17 is pushed downwardly until the lip 17 snap engages into the lower groove 20 on the upper portion 14 of the body. In this position, the flange 23 extends into the aperture 22 on the valve member and seals against the side of the latter, so as to prevent the flow of liquid out of the closure.
In order to dispense an atomised flow of liquid, the user merely has to invert the bottle and deform it side wall to increase the pressure therein, so that liquid is forced through the atomising nozzle 27 via the aperture 29. The parameters of the atomised spray can be adjusted by turning the apertured end cap 26, the lip 28 thereon serving to prevent complete removal of the end cap 26. It will be appreciated that the valve member 17 needs to be closed before the atomised spray will work satisfactorily.
Referring to Figure 6 of the drawings, following use the cap 31 can be replaced, provided that the valve member 17 has been moved to its closed position (Figure 5).
In an alternative embodiment, an elongate tube may be connected to the collar 30, so that the atomiser can be operated with the bottle in its upright position.
The closure may be purchased separately for fitting to bottles, although the closure is so simple in construction that it can be provided with bottled water without significantly adding to the cost.
