Abstract

A novelty beverage bag, such as a tea bag, contains a predetermined quantity of a gelling agent. In use, water is added to the beverage bag which causes the gelling agent to swell up and form a gel, thus playing a joke on the 'victim'. The gelling agent may be any suitable non-toxic and tasteless gelling agent, e.g. sodium polyacrylate or sodium polyacrylamide. The beverage bag may include colouring agents, flavourings etc. to mimic tea, coffee, or some other beverage. The beverage bag may include a false or glued seal which melts on contact with water. A method of manufacturing a beverage bag is also claimed, comprising the steps of positioning a suitable quantity of gelling agent on a first layer of liquid permeable material, covering the gelling agent with a second layer of liquid permeable material, and sealing the first and second layers of liquid permeable material together.

Description

1 2447895
NOVELTY BEVERAGE BAG
The present invention relates to a novelty beverage bag, more particularly a novelty tea bag, which can be utilised for playing a joke or prank on someone.
At present, a variety of novelty or joke products are available, primarily aimed at the children's market, but which are occasionally used by adults also, for example a joke soap which turns the users hands black, or whoopee cushions or the like, amongst others. There is, in addition, a "hot tea bag" wherein the contents include a hot spice such as chilli. All of such products are intended to play a harmless joke on someone for the enjoyment of others at their expense. The object of the present invention is to provide a new joke product.
According to the present invention there is provided a beverage bag containing a predetermined quantity of a gelling agent. The gelling agent may be any suitable non-toxic and tasteless gelling agent and may, for example include sodium polyacrylate or sodium polyacrylaimide, which may be combined with colouring agents or the like, or flavourings, to mimic tea or coffee, or sonic other beverage.
The preferred gelling agent is sodium polyacrylate and a suitable amount to be contained in the beverage bag would be between 2g and 4g to achieve the optimum result. However, the amount of sodium polyacrylate can vary from as little as O.5g, up to 50g, according to the intended purpose and requirements of use.
The use of the product will be as follows in that the prank or joke beverage, for example a tea bag, will be placed with other normal tea bags so that when a person on whom the prank or joke is to be played, goes to make a cup of tea, the tea bag is placed either in a cup or in a tea pot and then water is poured onto the tea bag, which causes the sodium polyacrylate contained in the bag to swell up and form a gel in the tea-cup or teapot and thereby play a joke on the "victim". The tea bag/beverage bag may have a false seal, or a glued seal, which melts when coming into contact with hot water, which enables the tea bag to be removed from the gelled contents of the cup or tea pot to enhance the effect of the joke or prank. Whilst it will be normal to utilise hot water for this prank, such would equally work with cold water to avoid any potential risks with scalding or burning with a hot substance, particularly when used by children.
When the joke or prank has taken place, the addition of a small amount of salt into the cup or mug will return the gel to a liquid form, which may then be poured away.
It will be appreciated that this beverage bag can be used for a number of beverages, although conventionally it is tea -and filter coffee that is provided in such bags, but other materials could also be conceived and would still fulfil the purpose of the joke/prank. Equally if the tea bag were placed amongst others in a teapot, then this would still have effectiveness in that the gelling agent in the prank tea bag would swell in the teapot gelling the contents thereof and preventing any tea from being poured from the pot.
