Abstract

There is provided a diesel and a petrol template/gauge/checker to confirm that the correct dispensing nozzle has been selected or that the incorrect dispensing nozzle has been selected. There is also a label advising what fuel the vehicle runs on and to use the fuel checker. The template/gauge/checker may have an outside horizontal measurement of a diesel filling nozzle spout, which is fitted to the inside of a vehicles filler flap or in the vicinity of the fuel filling aperture, cap or fuel filler protective flap. A visual or audible warning may be provided. Switches 1-5 may be provided, when a nozzle is placed near the switches different lights may indicate that the correct or incorrect fuel has been selected.

Description

FUEL CHECKERJINDICATOR
Technical Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a visual and physical checking/warning system, and particularly, but not exclusively, to a visual and physical checking/warning system for a vehicle fuel dispensing system.
Background to the Invention
Recent developments in the field of diesel-powered engines have led to a marked increase in the number of diesel cars available on the market. This in turn has led to diesel fuel being made available on the main forecourts of vehicle filling stations, usually on the same pump islands as unleaded and lead replacement petrol. The majority of filling stations use standard colour codes and prominent labeling to assist motorists in selecting the correct fuel. However, despite these precautions, in the UK alone an estimated 120,000 drivers each year put the wrong fuel in a car's fuel tank (The AA Motoring Trust). Large amounts of incorrect fuel can cause severe engine damage, and even small amounts of incorrect fuel can cause severe damage to an engine's fuel and catalyst systems. The cost of repairing the damage caused by misfuelling can be many thousands of pounds. Various devices have been created to tackle this problem. The majority of designs aim to prevent petrol vehicles being refuelled with diesel, often by making use of the difference in size between the standard unleaded petrol nozzle and the somewhat larger diesel filler pipe. Typical devices include attachments for diesel filler pipes, as disclosed in EP 1 284 212, and also cooperating attachments for diesel filler pipes and associated diesel fuel nozzles, as disclosed in GB 2 287 700. However these devices involve significant modification of existing filler pipes and provide no protection for the less common, but still problematic situation in which a petrol vehicle is refuelled with diesel fuel. One device that is also capable of preventing a petrol vehicle from being refuelled with diesel fuel is described in GB 2413122. This document describes a vehicle fuel dispenser nozzle for preventing incorrect fuelling having a fluid dispenser lock which is moveable under the action of an appropriate magnet key between a locked position in which fluid can be dispensed and an unlocked position in which fuel can be dispensed.
However, incorporating this fluid dispenser lock into a fluid dispenser nozzle requires significant modification to the handle of the nozzle.
Summary of the Invention
The first aspect of the present invention is that there is a plastic (or similar material) diesel template/gauge/checker corresponding to the outside horizontal measurement of a diesel filling nozzle spout, approximately 25.5mm, which is fitted to the inside of a vehicles filler flap or in the vicinity of the fuel filling aperture, cap or fuel filler protective flap. By placing the diesel filling nozzle spout inside the diesel template/gauge a motorist confirms that he/she has chosen the fuel nozzle corresponding to the diesel template/gauge which is the correct template/gauge/checker for the vehicle on which it has been attached, thus confirming that the fuel supply is correct for that vehicle.
The second aspect of the present invention is visual confirmation that the correct diesel filling nozzle has been selected is by way of the illumination of a green light(s) alone or a green light(s) silhouetting an ok, tick, go or similar wording or sign.
The third aspect of the present invention is audible confirmation that the correct diesel filling nozzle has been selected is by way of an audible noise or voice recording.
The fourth aspect of the present invention is a visual warning that an incorrect filling nozzle, petrol or otherwise, has been selected is by way of the illumination of a red light(s) alone or a red light(s) silhouetting a stop, cross, wrong fuel or similar wording or sign.
The fifth aspect of the present invention is an audible warning that an incorrect filling nozzle, petrol or otherwise, has been selected is by way of an audible noise or voice recording.
The sixth aspect of the present invention is that upon the detection of an incorrect filling nozzle by use of the fuel checker described in the first aspect a flap, sign or otherwise either sprung loaded, electronic or otherwise, is released from the fuel checker warning and preventing the occurrence of misfuelling.
The seventh aspect of the present invention is that there is a plastic (or similar material) petrol template/gauge/checker corresponding to the outside horizontal measurement of a petrol filling nozzle spout, approximately 21.5mm, which is fitted to the inside of a vehicles filler flap or in the vicinity of the fuel filling aperture, cap or fuel filler protective flap. By placing the petrol filling nozzle spout inside the petrol template/gauge a motorist confirms that he/she has chosen the fuel nozzle corresponding to the petrol template/gauge which is the correct template/gauge/checker for the vehicle on which it has been attached, thus confirming that the fuel supply is correct for that vehicle.
The eighth aspect of the present invention is visual confirmation that the correct petrol filling nozzle has been selected is by way of the illumination of a green light(s) alone or a green light(s) silhouetting an ok, tick, go or similar wording or sign.
The ninth aspect of the present invention is audible confirmation that the correct petrol filling nozzle has been selected is by way of an audible noise or voice recording.
The tenth aspect of the present invention is a visual warning that an incorrect filling nozzle, diesel or otherwise, has been selected is by way of the illumination of a red light(s) alone or a red light(s) silhouetting a stop, cross, wrong fuel or similar wording or sign.
The eleventh aspect of the present invention is audible warning that an incorrect filling nozzle, diesel or otherwise, has been selected is by way of an audible noise or voice recording.
The twelfth aspect of the present invention is that upon the detection of an incorrect filling nozzle by use of the fuel checker described in the seventh aspect a flap, sign or otherwise either sprung loaded, electronic or otherwise, is released from the fuel checker warning and preventing the occurrence of misfue fling.
The thirteenth aspect of the present invention is a separate diesel fuel checker label warning the vehicle operator that his/her vehicle runs on diesel and to use the diesel fuel checker.
The fourteenth aspect of the present invention is a separate petrol fuel checker label warning the vehicle operator that his/her vehicle runs on petrol and to use the petrol fuel checker.
The fithteenth aspect of the present invention is that the fuel checkers described in the first and seventh aspects can be fitted either above the fuel filler pipe or on or in the vicinity of the fuel filler protective flap.
The sixteenth aspect of the present invention is that the labels described in the thirteenth and fourteenth aspects can be fitted either above the fuel filler pipe or on or in the vicinity the fuel filler protective flap.
The seventeenth aspect of the present invention is the template/gauge/checker as described in the first and seventh aspects could be moulded during construction as part of a vehicles structure into the bodywork in and around the refueling area of the vehicle thus becoming an intrical and permanent part of the vehicle design.
