Abstract

A vertical axis wind turbine comprises vanes w, x, y, z located on several vertically spaced levels and which rotate about a central shaft (6, figure 1). The vanes w, x, y, z may be hinged to a wide smooth shell, mounted on several circular frames secured to the shaft 6 by radial spokes. The vanes w, x, y, z may be arranged such that they open in sequence and at regular intervals. The vanes w, x, y, z may each comprise two plates (30, 47, figure 9) one of which slides and is adjustable by a governor to reduce the surface area of the vane w, x, y, z. A restraining arm (34, figure 8) of each vane w, x, y, z may comprise a pneumatic pump which can act as a power reserve. Wave-crest shaped nodules may be provided on the shell surface to supplement the power derived from the vanes w, x, y, z.
