Description

* 2446462 AN ARTICLE OF FOO1WEAR This invention relates to an article
of footwear and, more especially, this invention relates to an article of footwear with cleaning means.
It has long been appreciated that cleaning floors and the like is a strenuous activity and it involves bending unless a long-handled mop is used.
In order to minimise these problems, there have been many attempts at formulating an article of footwear having cleaning means. The reasoning behind the known articles of footwear with their cleaning means is that deaning can be effected with a person's foot. By using their foot, a person is not required to bend. Also, the person is thus able to use the strength of their leg to effect the cleaning if a substantial cleaning force is required. The known articles of footwear with their cleaning means are not entirely satisfactory in that they may be used in situations where the cleaning means rapidly becomes dirty and/or worn out. In these circumstances, the known articles of footwear are such that the dirty cleaning means is not easily washed and the worn out cleaning means is not easily replaced. Unwanted cost then has to be incurred in providing a completely new article of footwear.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problems.
* Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided an article of footwear comprising an upper, a sole, cleaning means, and attachment means for attaching the cleaning means to a bottom face of the sole, and the article of footwear being such the cleaning means is formed in the shape of the sole and does not extend beyond the periphery of the sole, the attachment means is a two-part attachment means of a type comprising a matrix of members which secure together by pressing and which separate by pulling, the sole is provided with one part of the attachment means, the cleaning means is provided with the other part of the attachment means, the part of the attachment means on the sole forms a permanent non-separable part of the sole, and the cleaning means is separable from the sole by pulling the attachment means apart whereby the cleaning means is able to be removed from the sole for being washed or replaced.
The article of footwear of the present invention is advantageous as compared with known articles of footwear in that the cleaning means in the article of footwear of the present invention can easily be removed from the sole for being washed or being replaced. Thus, if the cleaning means should become dirty, it is easy to wash the cleaning means and there is no need to discard the entire article of footwear simply on the basis that the cleaning means is dirty and/or is difficult to wash. Similarly, if the cleaning means should become worn after use of the article of footwear, then the cleaning means can easily be replaced and again there is no need to incur the expense of an entirely new article of footwear.
With the article of footwear of the present invention, if it is desired to replace a worn cleaning means, or simply to replace a cleaning means with another cleaning means having another cleaning property, then this can easily be effected. Packets of cleaning means may be purchased with one or more of the same or different types of replacement cleaning means for use with the article of footwear of the present invention. If it is desired to absorb water from a floor, then one type of cleaning means can be employed. If it is desired to pot ish a floor, then another type of cleaning means can easily be employed. Both types of cleaning means can easily be placed on and removed from the article of footwear.
The article of footwear of the present invention may be one in which the part of the attachment means provided on the sole is a separately formed part which is permanently secured to the sole. Any suitable and appropriate secunng means may be employed for permanently securing the attachment means to the sole. Thus, for example, the separately formed part may be permanently secured to the sole by an adhesive or by sewing.
Alternatively, the article of footwear may be one in which the part of the attachment means provided on the sole is a moulding formed as an integral part of the sole during forming of the sole by moulding. Many articles of footwear already have their soles formed by the moulding of a plastics material, for example a moulded foam material in the case of flip flops. With the use of an appropriate die, the bottom face of the sole can be provided with the required part of the attachment means.
In all embodiments of the invention, the part of the attachment means provided on the sole may extend all over the sole.
Alternatively, the part of the attachment means provided on the sole may extend over discrete areas of the sole. In this case, the discrete areas may be in the form of strips. The article of footwear may then be one in which the strips are spaced apart, and in which the spaced apart strips extend transversely across the sole. Alternatively, the article of footwear may be one in which the strips are spaced apart, and in which the spaced apart strips extend longitudinally along the sole.
As an alternative to strips, the discrete areas may be in the form of pads. The pads may be of circular, square, rectangular or other suitable and appropriate shape in plan view.
The article of footwear may be one in which the article of footwear has a heel, and in which the heel has a bottom face which is formed as an extension of the bottom face of the sole so that the bottom face of the sole includes the heel. The article of footwear may alternatively be constructed such that the heel is separately formed from the sole. In this case, the separate heel may have a bottom face which is provided with the cleaning means and the attachment means in the same manner as the bottom face of the sole. Alternatively, if desired, the bottom face of the separate heel could be left plain, that is without the cleaning means and the attachment means.
The matrix of members of the attachment means is preferably a matrix of hook and loop members. Preferably, the matrix of hook and loop members is of the type known as Velcro (Registered Trade Mark). Other types of hook and loop members may be employed. Other formations that achieve the same press-to-close and pull-to-open flexible matrix action may be employed.
The cleaning means may be a one-part cleaning means. In this case, the cleaning means may be a water-absorbing cleaning means and/or a polishing cleaning means. The cleaning means may be designed for other cleaning functions as may be desired.
Alternatively, the cleaning means may be a two-part cleaning means comprising a first part which covers a major area of the bottom face of the sole, and a second part which covers a minor area of the bottom face of the sole, in which the first and the second parts of the cleaning means have different cleaning properties, and in which the first and the second parts of the cleaning means are separately separable from the sole for the washing or the replacement.
With a two-part cleaning means, the second part of the cleaning means is preferably located on a toe area of the sole only.
-With a two-part cleaning means, the article of footwear may be one in which the first part is a water-absorbing cleaning means andlor a polishing cleaning means, and in which the second part is a scouring cleaning means.
The first part may have other cleaning properties, and the second part may also have other cleaning properties.
The article of footwear may be one in which the cleaning means is a laminated cleaning means comprising a first layer for effecting cleaning, a second layer having one part of the two-part attachment means, and a third layer which connects the first and the second layers together. The third layer may be an adhesive layer.
The cleaning means may be a die cut cleaning means.
The article of footwear may be any suitable and appropriate article of footwear. Thus, for example the article of footwear may be a flip flop, a sandal, a trainer or a shoe. Preferably the article of footwear is such that it is worn solely and directly on a person's foot. Thus the article of footwear of the present invention is preferably not in the nature of an overshoe but the article of footwear may be an overshoe if desired.
Apart from the provision of the cleaning means and the adhesive means, the article of footwear may be constructed as known footwear and of known materials.
The present invention also extends to a pair of the articles of footwear, one of the articles of footwear being for a person's right foot, and one of the artides of footwear being for a person's left foot.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from underneath of a first article of footwear; Figure 2 is a perspective view like Figure 1 but shows the article of footwear without its cleaning means; Figure 3 is a perspective view from above of the article of footwear as shown in Figure 1; Figures 4, 5 and 6 shown three different types of cleaning means for forming parts of articles of footwear of the present invention; Figures 7 and 8 illustrate in exploded form how the two parts of a two-part cleaning means are made; Figure 9 shows the two-part cleaning means of Figures 7 and 8 connected together; Figure 10 is a perspective view of an alternative article of footwear to that shown in Figure 1; and Figure 11 is a perspective view of part of a further alternative article of footwear.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 there is shown an article of footwear 2 comprising an upper 4, a sole 6, cleaning means 8, and attachment means 10 for attaching the cleaning means 8 to a bottom face 12 of the sole.
The article of footwear 2 is such that the attachment means 10 is a two-part attachment means 10 of a type comprising a matrix of members which secure together by pressing and which separate by pulling. The sole 6 is provided with one part 14 of the matrix of members. The cleaning means 8 is provided with the other part 16 of the matrix of members. The part 14 of the attachment means on the sole 6 forms a permanent non-separable part of the sole 6. The cleaning means 8 is separable from the sole 6 by pulling the attachment means 10 apart whereby the cleaning means 8 can be removed from the sole 6 for being washed or replaced.
The part 14 of the attachment means 10 provided on the sole 6 may be a separately formed part which is permanently secured to the sole 6 by any suitable securing means, for example an adhesive or sewing. Alternatively, the part 14 of the attachment means 10 provided on the sole 6 may be a moulding formed as an integral part of the sole 6 during forming of the sole 6 by moulding.
As shown in Figure 2, the part 14 of the attachment means provided on the sole 6 extends all over the sole 6. In alternative embodiments of the invention, the part 14 of the attachment means provided on the sole 6 could extend over discrete areas of the sole, with the discrete areas being in the form of strips extending transversely across the sole 6, or extending longitudinally along the sole 6.
As can best be appreciated from Figure 1, the article of footwear 2 is such that it is has a heel 18. The heel 18 has a bottom face 20 which is formed as an extension of the bottom face 12 so that the bottom face 12 of the sole includes the heel.
The matrix of members on the parts 14, 16 is preferably a matrix of hook and loop members of the type known as Velcro (Registered Trade Mark). Either part of the hook and loop members may form the part 14. and either part of the hook and loop members may form the part 16. Other formations that achieve the same press-to-close and pull-to-open flexible matrix action may be employed.
The cleaning means 8 shown in Figure 1 is a two-part cleaning means comprising a first part 22 and a second part 24. The first part 22 covers a major area of the bottom face 12 of the sole 6. The second part 24 covers a minor area of the bottom face 12 of the sole 6. The first part 22 and the second part 24 have different cleaning properties. The first part 22 and the second part 24 are separately separable from the sole for washing or replacement purposes. Thus, for example, if the second part 24 should become dirty or worn out before the first part 22, then the second part 24 can independently be removed from the article of footwear 2 for washing or replacement as may be required.
The second part 24 of the cleaning means 8 is located on a toe area of the sole only. The first part 24 extends as shown from a heel part of the article of footwear 2 towards the toe area. The first part 22 is preferably a water absorbing cleaning means and/or polishing cleaning means. The second part 24 is preferably a scouring cleaning means. Other cleaning properties for the first part 22 and the second part 24 may be employed.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a one-part cleaning means 26. This one part cleaning means 26 is in the form of a sponge.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a two-part cleaning means 28. A first part 30 is a sponge cleaning means, whilst a second part 32 is a light-weight scouring cleaning means in the form of a toe pad.
Figure 6 shows a two-part cleaning means 34 with a first part 36 being.
a sponge cleaning means, and a second part 38 being a heavy-duty scouring cleaning means.
Figure 7 shows how the first part 36 of the two-part cleaning means 34 shown in Figure 6 is made up of three layers. More specifically, there is a sponge layer 40, an adhesive layer 42, and a Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) layer 44. The adhesive layer 42 sticks the layer 44 to the sponge layer 40.
Figure 8 shows how the second part 38 of the two-part cleaning means 34 shown in Figure 6 is made. More specifically, the second part 38 comprises a scouring layer 46, an adhesive layer 48, and a Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) layer 50. The adhesive layer 48 secures the layers 46 and 50 together.
Figure 9 shows how the cleaning means may be sold in a pack 52. As shown in Figure 9, the pack 52 contains an aggressive scourer part 54, a light scourer part 56, a first sponge part 58, and a second sponge part 60.
Referring now to Figure 10, there is shown an article of footwear 62 in the form of a trainer. The article of footwear 62 has an upper 64 and a sole 66. The sole 66 is provided with cleaning means 68 secured to a bottom face of the sole 66 by attachment means similar to the attachment means 10 for the article of footwear 2.
Referring now to Figure 11, there is shown part of an article of footwear 70 which is like the article of footwear 2 but which is provided with Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) strips 72 extending transversely across a sole 74 of the article of footwear 70. The strips 72 form one part of two-part attachment means, with the other part of the attachment means being secured to the cleaning means for the article of footwear 70.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the article of footwear may be other than the flip flop 2 or the trainer 62.
