Abstract

A hoe of comprises a blade having a serrated edge. The serrations each have a frusto-triangular shape with tips 18, 28 approximately 1 cm wide 17, 27. The hoe can be of either the Dutch or draw varieties.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO AGRICULTURAL
IMPLEMENTS
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
This invention relates to agricultural implements and, in particular, to manually operable hoes predominantly (but not exclusively) as used in gardening.
Background
Two types of hoe are known these being the so-called "Dutch" and the so-called "Draw". Each of such hoes has a blade attached to an elongate handle, the plane of the blade being generally coaxial with the elongate handle in the case of a "Dutch"hoe and being at an inclined angle to the axis of the elongate handle in the case of the "Draw" hoe.
In the past, each kind of hoe has had a straight linear edge to the blade to facilitate digging and or drawing of soil.
There are limitations to having a garden implement that solely provides such an arrangement and accordingly one or two examples have come onto the market of a single elongate handle having a draw hoe blade projecting to one side of the handle and digging tines projecting from the opposite side of the handle. Such an arrangement provides a multi-purpose garden implement but involves certain restrictions in use. 1'
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided an agricultural (preferably gardening) implement comprising an attachment part for attachment to an elongate handle, and a blade part having an operative edge distal from the attachment part, characterised in that said opcrative edge is serrated.
Preferably the serrated edge comprises a plurality (eg 3 or 4) of frusto-triangular elements.
Advantageously the sides of the frusto-triangular elements correspond to the sides of an isosceles triangle, these sides being at equal angles to the base of the triangle.
Preferable the tip edge of each frusto-triangular element has a width of the order of 1cm.
Brief Description of the Drawin2s
By way of example, embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a Dutch hoe embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of a Draw hoe embodying the present invention.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the blade of the implement illustrated in Fig. I and, Figure 4 is an enlarged view of the blade shown in Fig 2.
Detailed Description of Example(s) of the Invention The Dutch hoe 10 illustrated in Figs 1 and 3, and the Draw hoe 20 illustrated in Figs 2 and 4 are each an agricultural implement (preferably for use in gardening). Each implement 10,20 comprises an attachment part 12,22 in the form of a hollow boss suiting the implement for attachment to an elongate handle 14,24 (e.g. a wooden pole).
The attachment partl2,22 may provide for a fixed attachment to the elongate handle 14,24, or for an easily removable attachment arrangement, e.g. by means of co-operating screw threads. Each implement 10,20 further comprises a blade part 16,26 fixedly fast with -preferably integral with -the attachment part 12,22. The blade part 16,26 has an operative edge 15,25 distal from the attachment part 12,22 that is serrated. The serrated edge 15,25 comprises a plurality of frusto-triangular elements 18,28 -three such elements being provided for the operative edge 15 of the Dutch hoe 10, but four such elements being provided for the operative edge 25 of the Draw hoe 20.
It will be best seen from Figs 3 and 4 that the sides 17,27 of the frusto-triangular elements 18,28 correspond to the sides of an isosceles triangle, these sides being at equal angles (e.g. of the order of 60 ) to the base of the triangle. The tip edge 19,29 of each frusto-triangular element 18,28 (see Figs 3 and 4) preferably has a width of the order of 1cm.
It will additionally be noted that the Dutch hoe 10 of Figs I and 3 has its blade part 16 provided with a rectangular aperture 6 to permit the passage therethrough of debris resulting from hoeing, In a modification, the serrated edge 15,25 of the hoe is more jagged and is provided by non-symmetrical serrations. Other modifications and embodiments of the invention, which will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art, are to be deemed within the ambit and scope of the invention, and the particular embodiment(s) hereinbefore described may be varied in construction and detail, e.g. interchanging (where appropriate or desired) different features of each, without departing from the scope of the patent monopoly hereby sought.
