Abstract
A pet travel bed, for use in a motor vehicle, comprises a back panel 3, a base panel 4 and two side panels 5. Fixed to the back panel is an adjustable leash 6 for restraining the animal. The bed is formed from a foldable tubular frame covered with a padded outer shell formed from a woven fabric. The device may be secured to the seat of a vehicle using the fitted seat belts. The folded bed is secured by a closing fastening 2 and has a carrying handle 1.
Description
Pet travel bed This invention relates to a removable device which is
secured to a seat of a motor vehicle which allows a pet such as a dog or cat to be comfortably restrained, allowing it to sit or lie down, while protecting surrounding upholstery and folds away for easy storage when not in use.
When domestic animals such as dogs and cats travel in a motor vehicle without any form of restraint they are able to move throughout the cabin of the vehicle, this movement is a potential hazard to both the animal and the driver and is a disturbance to other potential passengers.
Even with the use of a restraint the animal may cause soiling and damage to the vehicle interior upholstery by depositing animal hair and dirt. This can be avoided by laying a blanket or some other protective cover over the seats but this can be dislodged with the animals' movement.
There are known containers for pets but none that combine the convenience of use, pet safety and comfort, allowing the pet to sit or lie down whilst protecting vehicle upholstery and that attaches securely to any motor vehicle seat either in the front or rear of the vehicle and fblds away for storage.
To overcome this problem the present invention proposes a bed which attaches to the vehicle seat using either the seat belt or isofix fittings as an anchor point, within the bed is a clip which attaches to a pet harness. The travel bed provides a means for restraining the animal, whilst allowing a certain amount of movement as it is able to sit or lie down, and a way of containing the mess such as hair and dirt the animal sheds whilst protecting the seat upholstery. The bed is easily installed and removed, cleaned and stored away.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. I. Front elevation of bed in closed position for storage.
Fig. 2. Front elevation of folded out bed ready for use showing outer shell Fig. 3. Front elevation of folded out bed inner framework Fig. 4. Side elevation of travel bed installed on existing seat of vehicle 2.
A pet travel bed for use in a motor vehicle Fig 2. comprising of a back panel 3, a base panel 4, two side panels 5 and a fixing leash 6. The preferred embodiment would comprise of an inner frame work and an outer shell between which there would be some padding.
Description of preferred embodiment
Listed numerically below with reference to the drawings are terms used to describe the features of this invention. These terms and numbers assigned to them designate the same
features throughout this description.
I. cany handle 2. closing fastening 3. bed back 4. bedbase 5. side panels 6. fixing leash 7. fixing point fbr leash 8. locking elbow join 9. locking base elbows 10. side braces 11. carseat Referring to Fig I the pet travel bed has a carry handle I which is attached to the top part of the bed back 3 and a closing fastening enabling the bed back 3 and bed base 4 to be fixed together when the bed is not in use.
Referring to Fig 2 the pet travel bed preferably has an outer shell which consists of a bed back 3, which is hollow and preferably rectangular in shape, attached to the bed base 4, which is hollow and which is preferably the same size and shape as bed back 3, on its lower horizontal side. The bed back 3 is also attached to a side panel 5, which is preferably triangular in shape and is made up of two triangles, one to be attached to the front vertical edge of the bed back 3 and the other outer part to the back edge of the vertical edge of bed back 3 thus fbrming a sleeve or hollow space into which the framework Fig 2 can be inserted. The bed base 4 is attached to each side panel at each side perpendicular to the side which is attached to the bed back 3. This fbrms the outer shell of the pet travel bed and would preferably be made of a woven material which is wipe clean and included padding between it and the inner framework Fig 3.
The fixing leash 6 is attached through the outer shell of bed back 3 to a fixing point on the inner frame 7. preferably in the centre of the cross of the frame within the bed back 3.and extendcd to a position of attachment to a pet harness that is not show on a pet.
The fixing leash 6 would preferably be an adjustable leash consisting of woven fabric with a loop at one end that loops round and so anchors at the fixing point for leash 7 and a dog clip on the other end so it can attach to a pet harness. 3.
Refrring to the frame work of the pet travel bed Fig 3 the bed back 3 would contain a tube running along all its outer edges joined at each corner forming a rectangle with two cross braces connecting each of the bed back 3 opposite corners, the point at which these cross braces cross forms the preferred fixing point for leash 7. The frame work of the bed base 4 would contain a tube running along its front and side edges and be attached to the frame work of the bed back 3 with locking base elbows 9 at these points. The side braces would be connected to the top corners of the bed back 3 frame and the front corner of the bed base 4 flame and would have a locking elbow joint 8 preferably halfway down its length.
Referring to Fig 3 the pet travel bed would be attached to the seat of a motor vehicle in the same manner as that used in a child car seat, by passing the seat belt of the vehicle seat through a channel in the bed base passing over the points marked by the locking base elbows 9. this is also the points where isofix fittings could be used.
Fig 4 shows the ideal positioning of the pet travel bed ready to use on the seat of a motor vehicle.
A new and usefll pet travel bed having been described, all such foreseeable modifications, adaptations, substitutions or equivalents, mathematical possibilities of combinations of parts, pluralities of parts, applications and forms thereof as described by the fbllowing claims and not precluded by prior art are included in this invention.
