Abstract
The composite board 10 is formed from a core 20 of bonded wood particles covered with a lamination 30 of a thermosetting plastic which releases heavy metal, especially antimicrobial silver (Ag+) ions from a preferably hydrolysable matrix. Preferably the thermosetting resin is melamine formaldehyde (MFR). Preferably the softwood particles are bonded with a urea formaldehyde or MFR. The layers 20, 30 may be adhesively bonded. The boards can be used as work surfaces in hospitals and other areas, and are highly effective at destroying known antibiotic resistant superbugs.
Description
Philip Reed
ANTIMICROBIAL COMPOSITE BOARD
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to the problem of reducing the everyday risk of cross-infection by micro-organisms.
BACKGROUND
The emergence of bacteria which are resistant to most known antibiotics is a major problem worldwide. Many bacterial diseases such as MRSA, clostridium difficile and certain strains of e. coil can prove to be fatal, and are easily acquired by direct skin contact with surfaces contaminated with these microorganisms. C. clifficile causes a range of diseases from antibiotic-associated diarrhoea to a life-threatening colon disease called pseudomembranous colitis, and presents a particular problem for healthcare professionals because it can only be treated with two antibiotics, metronidazole and vancomycin, and there is concern that these too will soon become ineffective.
Common hygiene advice aimed at reducing the spread of such diseases is to practice frequent hand washing, preferably using disinfecting solutions, but although this remains good practice it can never be completely effective no matter how diligently it is carried out.
Disinfectants applied to work surfaces are instant and effective, but they only offer a short-term solution. Bacteria can start to grow again as soon as the disinfectant evaporates.
Non-specific biocidal polymers are currently used in various injection moulded plastic items, welt known examples being 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenol ether, or 5-chloro-2-phenol (2,4 dichlorophenoxy) as sold under the trademark Micro ban, by Microban Products Company, Huntersville, N.C. However, many such agents require regular surface activation (e.g washing with water) to maintain their effectiveness, and show a marked reduction in antibacterial activity with time.
The present invention seeks to provide a new and inventive way of reducing the spread of infections, which is particularly effective against antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" such as those mentioned above.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention proposes a composite board which comprises a core of bonded wood particles with a surface lamination formed of a thermosetting plastic which releases heavy metal ions, preferably silver (Ag+) ions.
The composite board is suitable for use in areas which have been identified as a source of bacterial infections, e.g. as worktops.
The silver ions are preferably held in a hydrolysable matrix which is added to the thermosetting plastic during manufacture of the board. For optimum effect against antibiotic-resistant bacteria the silver-containing matrix is preferably added to the thermosetting plastic in a proportion of between 2% and 10% by weight.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The following description and the accompanying drawings referred to therein are included by way of non-limiting example in order to illustrate how the invention may be put into practice. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of an antimicrobial composite board for use in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is a similar view of a second form of antimicrobial composite board for use in accordance with the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Fig. I shows a flat composite board 10 having top and bottom surfaces 11 and 12 and front and rear surfaces 13 and 14 which extend along the length of the board, perpendicular to the top surface 11. The board shown in Fig. 2 is of similar construction except that the front face 13 is formed to meet the top surface 11 in a continuous smooth curve. The boards both have a relatively thick core 20 which is covered with a surface laminate 30 formed of a thermosetting plastic which releases silver (Ag ) ions. The laminate is applied to the top, front and rear surfaces 11, 13 and 14.
The core 20 is predominantly formed of wood particles which are bonded together by means of a resin such as urea formaldehyde or a water-resistant resin such as melamine formaldehyde. During manufacture, a mix of the wood particles and the resin is spread in a mould to the required thickness and heat bonded with application of pressure. The laminate 30 is formed of a thermosetting plastic such as melamine, e.g. Formica, incorporating an additive such as Bactiglas AM 93382 which releases silver (Ag+) ions. The silver ions are encapsulated in a hydrolysable glass matrix which is extremely stable and protects the ions during thermal processing of the plastic. However, once the plastic is set, ions are continually released from the surface at controlled rate under the influence of the hydrolysable matrix. The additive is mixed with the thermosetting material in a proportion of about 6% by weight. The hot liquid plastic is spread in a thin film and cooled so that it sets to form sheets. The sheet is then cut to size and bonded to the core using a
suitable adhesive.
The slow release of Ag+ ions acts as a biocide which interrupts the normal membrane functions of bacteria which come into contact with the laminate sheets, resulting in rapid destruction of the micro-organisms.
The laminate can be cleaned using a mixture of ordinary detergent and water. The antimicrobial properties do not diminish with age, and in fact surface wear may aid the release of silver ions.
The boards can easily be cut to size using a saw. The boards may, for example, be used as worktops and similar surfaces in hospitals, e.g. in operating theatres, toilets, areas which contain clinical waste, sluice rooms and the like. The boards can also be advantageously used in domestic kitchens, schools, restaurants, changing rooms, bath or wash rooms, public toilets, supermarkets or offices.
Tests carried out by a Japanese laboratory have shown that the laminated surfaces of the board are better than 99.995% effective at destroying MRSA bacteria, which is considerably more effective than other antibacterial surface treatments. Independent tests have also confirmed that the antibacterial properties are not significantly diminished after a period of eight years.
It will be appreciated that the features disclosed herein may be present in any embodiment of the invention in any feasible combination. Whilst the above description places emphasis on those areas which, in combination, are believed to be new, protection is sought for any inventive combination of the features disclosed herein * * * * * * * *
