Abstract

244,552. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Western Electric Co., hic.). Oct. 11, 1924. Addition to 243,088. Thermionic generators, amplifiers, and modulating systems.-In order to obtain an equal distribution of the load upon the tubes for all frequencies, and to prevent inter-tube '' singing," the various tubes in a combined high-power amplifying and modulating installation, are arranged in a symmetrical disposition with reference to the input and output circuits. As shown in Fig. 1 the power amplifiers 30, fed in parallel from a source 26, are arranged four at the vertices of a rectangle and the fifth at a point in line with one of the sides. The grid bus bar 41 forming the common input is substantially U-shaped, as are the filament supply leads 29, 31 fed by a source 17. The modulator tubes 20 are similarly arranged, the input from the microphone 11 being connected across the common grid bus-bar 40 and the filament supply. The common plate current is taken from a generator 18 through a choke 21 which contains a constant current supply. Inductance coils 24 and 36 are included in the plate circuit of each of the tubes to prevent " singing," as described in Specification 217,552. Similarly, a choke 22 prevents hgih-frequency oscillations in the output from the amplifiers 30 from being impressed upon the plates of the modulators 20. Fig. 2 shows an alternative arrangement in which six power amplifiers 30 are associated with six modulators 20. Here the grid bus-bars 40 and 31 respectively are in the form of a closed ring, and also one lead 27, 29 respectively of each filament supply, the other filament lead being arranged symmetrically as shown. Fuses 44, 47 and jacks 45, 48 are also inserted in each plate circuit to protect the tube' and to enable the insertion of an ammeter respectively. The plate supply is tapped off central bus-bars 25 and 37 from a common source 18. The filaments are fed in parallel from an alternator 17.
