Abstract
A wireless communication system providing low cost Voice over IP (VoIP) extension to the existing and future cellular telephony systems is described. This invention relates to a setup consisting of a Mobile Station (MS) and Customer premises Equipment (CPE) and/or a Base Station (BS) capable of dual mode radio link on both licensed and unlicensed bands. While operating on either licensed or unlicensed band, with the exception of the RF transceiver, the mobile handset uses the same protocol stack including message and link as well as base-band layers.
Description
* 2444997 Dual Licensed-Unlicensed Wireless System This invention
details a wireless communication system providing low cost Voice over IP (V0IP) extension to the existing and future cellular telephor systems.
More specifically, this invention relates to a set up consisting of a Mobile Station (MS) and Customer premises Equipment (CPE) and/or a Base Station (BS) capable of dual mode radio link on both licensed and unlicensed bands.
The MS is capable of switching between a given air interface (such as WCDMA, CDMA2000, GSM and EDGE) over licensed band to an equivalent air interface over the unlicensed band. For example a cellular GSM Mobile Station operating in the licensed band would also operate using GSM air interface but at a different frequency within the unlicensed band and powar output. Equally the BS/CPE caters for sending and receiving GSM signals over the unlicensed band as well as the normal licensed GSM to communicate with the MS under both modes of operation.
An example by which the above can be effectively utilized is for MS to operate in the licensed band with, for example, the GSM air interface as in any other GSM:1....
cellular system to initiate and receive voice calls, transmit and receive SMS text * messages as well as any other capabilities or features provided by GSM network operator. The Mobile Station can then switch to the unlicensed band using the same GSM air interface and connected to a CPE such as broadband gateway by: which the calls are routed using a Voice over IP (V0IP) protocol. A network based on this concept is presented in Figure 1, comprising of a Mobile handset (1) capabable of communicating with a mobile basestation (3) and V0IP CPE (2) over licensed and unlicensed bands, respectively. The VolP CPE (2) is in turn connected to internet (4) via a broadband link.
While operating on either licensed or unlicensed band, with the exception of the RF transceiver, the handset uses the same protocol stack including message and link as weti as baseband layers as shown in Figure 2. The components (layers) I to 6 are present in standard protocol within existing systems. The addition of component 7 provides for a complete protocol stack based on the present invention. This result in considerable reduction of cost, making this solution more attractive in comparison with competing technologies such as W1V0IP (Wireless VolP) over W1Fi.
BRIEF DESCRIRPTION OF ThE DRAWINGS Figure 1 shows the network architecture of the proposed system Figure 2 shows typical key layers for wireless communication devices with the invention of adding equivalent RF Transceivers operating in the un-licensed band.
Claims (5)
- Claims 1. A communication device or network capable of operating onboth Licensed and Unlicensed band both using the same air interface
- 2. A communication device consisting of a physical, MAC and higher level layers with two RF transceivers, one operating in the licensed and the other in the un-licensed bands.
- 3. A communication device consisting of a physical, MAC and higher level layers with one RF transceiver, capable of switching between licensed and the other in the un-licensed bands.
- 4. A communication device consisting of one or multiplicity of RF transceivers capable of transmitting and receiving WCDMA, CDMA2000, GSM and EDGE signals within the un-licensed bands.
- 5. A communication network where the CPE and or BTS communicate with * the MS over both the licensed and un-licensed bands to achieve the best performance and quality of service by diverting or switching the voice traffic from the cellular to the lP broad band network when communication between the MS and the CPE or BTS is over the unlicensed band. *S*. * * *.a *** * * *
