Abstract

A language translation notepad unit includes identically formatted colour coded paper for dialect comparisons, the flexibility to increase the number of pages to meet a specific requirement, and transparent sheets installed over each conventional page to act as a primary or secondary platform on which the user may write. The transparent sheets may be cleaned and reused. They are slightly larger than the sheets they are protecting. The use of laminates offers some weather protection.

This invention relates to a paper record pad formatted for the purpose of translation that is provided some weather protection by the use of laminate sheeting.

The Purpose of the EW Companion The primary purpose of the EW Companion is to provide language students/researchers with an easy method of cross referencing and comparing Western and Eastern languages. EW Companion is a raw data collection tool from which information can be manually passed to more sophisticated storage tools such as computers.

It is unnecessary to use the conventional paper beneath the transparent cover sheets which will make the EW Companion last longer. Information written using only the transparent sheets can be manually input on an IT storage unit when convenient before the transparency is cleaned and made ready for reuse. A consequence of such use will prove a financial saving to users.

The usage designed within format: I)Provides a conventional paper platform combined with transparent sheeting on which information can he written on top of the conventional paper in order to provide the user with a multi-view of information relating to the subject of interest. An example would be by using a transparent sheet to identify a list of reference sources while the conventional paper beneath it is used for more detailed work.

2) Alternatively the conventional paper need not be used at all with work only being carried out on the transparent sheet. In this way the conventional paper only acting as a backing guide. Such use would prolong the life of the EW Companion indefinitely.

3) In terms of language translation EW Companion offers users the opportunity to write in two languages on the same page and in sequence with each sentence or syntax for the purposes of comparison and easy reference. Additionally and where a graphical content needs to be explained in words, this is also achievable -the example given shows the word A D A M as expressed using Egyptian hieroglyphics shown alongside.

4) The EW Companion is particularly useful for field work i.e. work outside the office/school environment, as it possesses all the features necessary for notes to be collected, stored or prepared for scanning to a PC. Additionally because it is light, possesses some weather resistance, requires no power source and is unbreakable the EW Companion makes no extra demands on users who carry it compared with IT equipment. -

This invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to The accompanying drawings/pictures in which: Figure 1 shows an example of the conventional page formatting with each page divided into two columns half lined half blank. The reason for this is in order to provide users with a platform on which they may compare information provided in different forms e.g. an Eastern language and English whereby the foreign language is written using hieroglyphics or other graphic form that do not require lined paper.

Figure 2 shows the three colour codes used for different dialects, although this example only uses three colours it is obviously possible to extend this in relation to the number of dialects needed. EW Companion has colour coded pages in order that students/researchers may refer to different dialects found in specific languages e.g. Chinese -Hakka, Cantonese and Mandarin. For the purpose of this exercise reference to the Chinese language is often used however many other languages, for example Arabic contain several dialects which the EW Companion could be increased in capacity to match.

Figure 3 shows the transparent cover sheet included over each conventional piece of paper. This sheet provides the flexibility of an additional writing platform, an alternate writing platform and some weather protection for outside use. Additionally the transparent sheets are slightly larger than the A4 sheets they accompany in order to Improve weather protection. The transparency sheet provides students/researchers with a highlighter platform that acts as a means to record their reference resources or alternatively a means by which they can trace the outline of characters/hieroglyphics in order to retain the natural detail. This would be especially useful to people in the field as no reliance on artificially powered devices is required.

Transparency sheets are reusable when a water based highlighter pen is used to write on them. The uses the transparency sheet can be put can therefore be dependent on the amount of written content placed on the conventional page e.g. when used in a timescale scenario where only a section of the conventional page is used the transparency page can be exploited to provide comprehensive information for each timescale before being cleaned off and reused.

Also the transparency sheet acts as protection to the paper sheet beneath it shielding the paper from both weather and liquid spills and to this end the transparency sheet is slightly larger than the conventional paper sheets it is protecting. The extra size of the transparency sheets also make it possible for users to quickly search out a specific page.

Figure 4 is a copy of the EW Companion which best shows off its features such as the wire binding at the top for ease of use, its laminated covers and the individual transparency sheeting that can be used in sync with the conventional paper beneath. In addition the A4 general size of the pad allows it to be practical for use by students/researchers on a daily basis either in the classroom/office or outside environments.

Binding Binding for the EW Companion is resolved using conventional wire binding at the top of the pages in a general note-pad style. The binding location is significant as it makes the use of the transparencies for tracing easier for the user to handle.

Multi-Functions of the EW Companion The EW Companion will provide an easily managed record that does not require a power source yet fulfils several significant demands made by those who require a research reference that is easily accessed and user friendly. The EW Companion adds another dimension to the continued use of paper as an essential element both in and outside the classroom environment.

Flexibility The EW Companion is designed for flexibility able to handle numerous tasks and additionally possesses a reusable capability thereby reducing waste and through the use of laminate materials provides some weather protection for external use.

The number of pages and size of the EW Companion is not restricted. A3, A4, A5 and A6 variants can be used to meet the demands of specific tasks for example Egyptology.

The EW Companion could also be provided with graphics already included for a specific purpose such as Sign language.

The creation of the EW Companion in its basic form as supplied for this patent offers a host of potential future variants that can genuinely contribute towards aiding those involved in education.

The transparency sheets also allow the EW Companion to be usable outside as well as indoors.

Claims

Claims 1. An individual notepad specifically designed to provide

students/researchers with a platform on which to record and compare languages in their written or graphical form.
2. An individual notepad according to claim 1, in which the provision of identically formatted colour coded conventional paper are included for the purpose of recording different dialects.
3. An individual notepad according to claim 1, that possesses the flexibility to provide an increased number of pages colour coded to meet a specific requirement.
4. An individual notepad according to claim 1 that possesses an identical number of transparent sheets installed before each conventional paper thereby allowing a primary or secondary platform on which to write.
5. An individual notepad according to claim 1, in which the use of laminates provides weather protection for external use.
