Abstract

A massaging device for use on a horse comprises an envelope (1) defining two flexible pads (2,3) one on each side of a supporting stay (4) adapted to lie along and conform to the shape of a horse's back. The pads are substantially filled with a resilient foam and are disposed to depend from the region of the stay, one on each side of the horse, when the stay is disposed on the horse's back. Each includes at least one electrically operated vibrator (9) operated from a rechargeable battery (8) carried in a pouch (7) on the outside of one of the pads. The device includes a harness including adjustable chest and belly straps (14,17).

Description

MASSAGING DEVICE FOR HORSES
This invention relates to a massaging device for use on horses The main object of the invention is to provide a massaging device which is comparatively simple in construction, convenient to use and comfortable for the horse for which the massage is intended.
According to the invention, a massaging device for use on a horse comprises an envelope defining two flexible pads one on each side of a supporting stay which is adapted to lie along and conform to the shape of a horse's back, the two pads being disposed to depend from the region of the stay, one on each side of the horse, when the stay is disposed on the horse's back, and each pad including at least one electrically operated vibrator.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention each pad comprises a flexible synthetic bag substantially filled with a resilient foam, which may be a polyurethane foam. At least one of the pads may have on its exterior a pouch or pouches for a rechargeable battery for the provision of electrical power to the vibrator or vibrators within the bag and a controller.
The device preferably includes a harness comprising straps extending from the pads, the harness including a belly strap and a chest strap, which are preferably adjustable to fit the horse's size and shape.
The vibrators may be electromechanical or piezo-electric vibrators of generally known construction.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a general view of the device laid flat; and Figure 2 illustrates the massaging device in position on a horse.
In the illustrated embodiment, a massaging device comprises a flexible envelope I which is partitioned by stitching or otherwise into two similar, generally rectangular pads 2 and 3. Extending between the pads 2 and 3 and within the envelope is a stay 4 which preferably extends for the whole length of the envelope 1.
The stay 4 is adapted to conform to the slight concavity of a horse's back. The stay is preferably of a flexible synthetic material. It may be slightly convex in an unstressed state, as will be shown in Figure 2. In any event the stay 4 is intended to lie along the top of the horse's back so that the pads 2 and 3 depend from the region of the stay, one each on each side of the horse.
The pads themselves may be substantially filled with a resilient foam such as a polyurethane foam of any suitable particular composition.
On the outer face of the pad 3 is a pouch 5 which may accommodate a controller 6. There is also another pouch 7 which can accommodate a rechargeable battery 8. The controller 6 and the rechargeable 8 are in an electrical circuit, not shown, which provides electrical energisation to one or more vibrators 9, which may be electromagnetic vibrators or piezo-electric vibrators, in this embodiment shown as discs, of which two are shown for each of the pads 2 and 3. The number and positions of the vibrators 9 may be varied according to preference.
The controller 6 may define a multiplicity of different modes of the vibration, to provide for example variation in amplitude, pulse length or frequency of the signals provided to the vibrators or possibly different signals selectively to different ones of the vibrators 9.
The massaging device also includes a harness adapted to extend around nether regions of the horse and preferably includes both a belly strap and a chest strap for the horse. The harness is in two similar parts and first the part depending from the pad 3 will be described. There are two diagonal straps 10 and 11 each with an adjusting glider 12 and 13 respectively. These are joined to a central belly strap 14 which is joined by a link 15 to a loop 16 attached to the bottom side edge of the pad 3.
Extending from the junction between the diagonal straps 10 and 11 and the belly strap 14 is of a chest strap 17 having a securing tongue 18 for engagement with a conforming latch 19 at the end of the other half 17a of the chest strap.
Likewise, the side edge of the pad 2 has diagonal straps lOa and I lajoined to a belly strap 14a, which has at its end a tongue 20 for engagement with a latch 21 at the end of the belly strap 14. There is further a chest strap I 7a of which the end buckle 19 engages with the tongue 18 at the end of the belly strap 17.
Figure 2 illustrates the massaging device in position on a horse 22. The pad 3 is shown as depending from the central stay 4 to the left-hand side of the horse, the pad 2 being invisible in this view. The device is secured on the horse by means of the adjustable belly straps 14, 14a and the adjustable chest straps 17, ha.
