Abstract

The container is made from a tubular blank comprising, in series, front panel 1, top panel 2, rear panel 3, base panel 4 and an overlapping U-shaped panel portion 5 designed to overlap the front panel. The panels have flaps 12 to 15 depending there from, which when the blank is erected form the sides of a closed carton. The front panel 1 is kept in its erected position thanks to detachable ear flaps 7 which are attached to the side walls, with glue or adhesive. The container has a detachable portion, which can be torn away for display purposes. The detachable portion comprises the whole of the front panel and a large portion of the top panel, and detachment is facilitated by the provision of hole 6 and tab 20 which can be manipulated for tearing the detachable portion along the score lines which extend on both side of the tab 20 to the end of the hinge lines that connect the front panel to the ear flaps 7.

Description

PACKAGING CARTON
1]This invention relates to a blank for a packaging carton and a carton formed from the blank.
2] In particular, the invention relates to a so-called "shelf-ready pack" intended to contain goods for sale and to be placed on a shelf in a shop. A known shelf-ready pack consists of a generally parallelepiped carton having a detachable part comprising most of the front and top panels of the carton. Once the detachable part is removed, items in the carton are displayed and can be removed one by one. The detachable part is defined by perforations, and once detached, at the front of the carton the periphery of the opening formed is jagged and unsightly.
3] With the aim of alleviating this disadvantage whilst still providing a robust and reliable carton, the invention provides a blank for forming a packaging carton of stiff but foldable material, comprising a front panel, a top panel, a rear panel and a base panel joined in a series at fold lines, and side flaps depending from at least some of said panels for forming sides of the carton, and a front peripheral portion, such that the blank can be erected into a closed carton with the front panel lodged behind the front peripheral portion without being attached thereto. In this way, the front panel can be removed without forming a jagged edge on the front peripheral portion.
4] The front peripheral portion may be U-shaped. In one embodiment, ears depending from the front panel are arranged for attachment, e.g. by gluing, to side panels depending from the front peripheral portion and are separable from the front panel, e.g. by means of perforations. At least a portion of the top panel may be separable from side panels depending therefrom such that, in the erected carton, the portion or top panel is removable together with the front panel.
5] The invention also provides a carton formed from the blank described above.
6] A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0007] Figure 1 is a plan of a blank according to the invention; [0008] Figure 2 shows the blank of Figure 1 in a partially erected state; [0009] Figure 3 shows a carton formed from the blank of Figure 1; and [0010] Figure 4 shows a carton of Figure 3 with the front panel and top portion removed.
1] Figure 1 shows a blank which can be cut and creased, for example, from double-faced corrugated paperboard. The blank includes a series of panels joined at crease lines, namely a front panel 1, a top panel 2, a rear panel 3, a base panel 4 and a U-shaped peripheral panel 5. Front panel 1 is slightly shorter and narrower than rear panel 3 and has an opening 6. . Ears 7 extend laterally from front panel 1 at its end nearest top panel 2 and lines of perforations extend along the crease lines between ears 7 and front panel 1.
2]Side panels 12, 13, 14, 15 extend laterally on either side of each of front panel 1, top, panel 2, rear panel 3, base panel 4 and peripheral panel 5 respectively. The width of the side panels is approximately equal to the length of the ears 7 and this dimension is approximately half the length of rear panel 3.
Narrow slots separate mutually adjacent side panels from each other.
3]Starting at the crease line with front panel 1, lines of perforations run along the crease lines between top panel 2 and its side panels 12 for the majority of the length thereof, and then extend inwardly at an angle as far as an imperforated straight side of a finger-aperture 20 defined by a further, generally semicircular line of perforations.
4] Figure 2 shows how the blank may be folded along the crease lines between top panel 2 and rear panel 3 and between base panel 4 and peripheral panel 5 to the position shown in Figure 2. In this condition the side panels 15 of peripheral panel 5 can be attached to the ears 7, for example by applying glue to the ears.
(0015] Subsequently the blank is erected into a carton and filled, the side panels 12,13, 14, 15 on each side being attached, e.g. glued, to each other as appropriate.
The finished carton appears as shown in Figure 3. The front panel 1 is lodged behind the U-shaped peripheral portion 5 to maintain the carton closed but is not attached to the peripheral portion.
[001 6] To afford maximum strength during transit the carton is placed on one of its sides, comprising one each of side panels 12, 14, with the others of the side panels 12, 14 uppermost. For display, e.g. on a shelf, the carton is placed in the position of Figure 3.
[001 7] The removable part of the carton comprising front panel I and the greater part of top panel 2 is then removed, grasping it by means of at least one of the opening 6 and the finger-aperture 20, and tearing along the lines of perforations, including those at the ears 7. Front panel 1 is pulled out from behind peripheral portion 6. After this operation the inner edge of peripheral portion 5, which serves to retain contents displayed within the opened carton, has a clean inner edge, not defined by the perforations. The torn edges previously defining part of the top panel 2 are usually concealed by a further shelf above the shelf on which the carton is located.

Claims (7)

A blank for forming a packaging carton of stiff but foldable material, comprising a front panel, a top panel, a rear panel and a base panel joined in a series at fold lines, and side flaps depending from at least some of said panels for forming sides of the carton, and a front peripheral portion, such that the blank can be erected into a closed carton with the front panel lodged behind the front peripheral portion without being attached thereto.
2. A blank according to claim 1, wherein the front peripheral portion is U-shaped.
3. A blank according to claim I or 2, wherein ears depending from the front panel are arranged for attachment to side panels depending from the front peripheral portion and are separable from the front panel.
4. A blank according to claim 3, wherein the ears are separable from the front panel by means of perforations.
5. A blank according to any preceding claim, wherein at least a portion of the top panel is separable from side panels depending therefrom such that, in the erected carton, the portion or top panel is removable together with the front panel.
6. A blank for forming a packaging carton of stiff but foldable material, substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
7. A packaging carton formed from a blank according to any preceding claim.
