Abstract
The invention concerns a method for enabling personalised video content downloads over peer-to-peer (P2P) distribution networks to Internet customers. The potential uses include: <SL> <LI>1. Delivery of personalised video content that includes the specific customer name as a part of the video content. <LI>2. Delivery of targeted video advertising to specific customers based on customer profiles and buying habits. </SL> The method may include a step for creating an individual watermark for specific customers. The downloaded content may be encrypted while being distributed over the peer-to-peer network.
Description
Personalised Video Content Distributed Over Peer-To-Peer Networks This
invention relates to a technology method that enables personalization of video content distributed over peer-to-peer networks to Internet customers.
Peer-to-peer networks in this context means an Internet based network of customers/peers that are all downloading the same content file at the same time and are distributing fragments of the content file directly between each other using peer-to-peer connections.
The potential use for this invention includes: 1. Delivery of personalised video content that includes the specific customer name as a part of the video content.
2. Delivery of targeted video advertising to specific customers.
Targeted advertisement in this context means a method where different video advertisements can be delivered to specific customers based on the cut-mer prcf!!c ad yiig haiiics.
When video content is distributed over peer-to-peer networks a key element that makes this method work is that the video content is identical for all customers/peers downloading the content. This is due to the technical nature of peer-to-peer methods requiring the downloaded content to be identical amongst all peers downloading. This limitation currently makes it impossible to personalise the downloaded video content for individual customers/peers in the peer-to-peer distribution network.
The invention solves this problem by distributing an activation software application along with encrypted video content downloaded over peer-to-peer networks.
* First the customer downloads content information from a regular Internet web server and then initiates the peer-to-peer download.
* After the video content has been fully downloaded over the peer-to-peer distribution network the customer starts the activation application, enters an activation key and the application contacts a server where an decryption key is downloaded.
* Then personalised video content is downloaded to the customer from a regular Internet server.
* Finally the video content is decrypted and the persorialised video content is spliced to the video content downloaded via the peer-to-peer network, the combined video file is watermarked and the video content is ready to be used by the customer.
Watermarking in this context means a method to add hidden information to video content in order to have the video content identifiable at a later date.
Figure 1 shows the technical activation steps as initiated by the Internet customer.
In figure 1, an Internet customer 1 downloads content from an Internet server 2 and from a peer-to-peer network 3. First the customer requests 4 information about the content 5 on the network and receives it 6. Next the Internet customer requests 7 an encrypted content file from the peer-to-peer network 8 and receives it 9. When the Internet customer has received the content he/she runs an activation application 10, then the Internet customer enters an activation code into the activation application 11 that has been delivered as a part of the content information 5. Next the activation application requests 12 a decryption key for the content 13 and receives it 14. Next the activation application requests 15 persorialised content, that can include the Internet customers name in a video clip and/or video advertisements 16, the personalised content is then received 17. Next the content is decrypted 18 using the decryption key 13. Then the decrypted video content and the personalised video content is spliced together into one video content file 19 and finally a watermark, using information from the content information 5, is added to the combined video content file 20.
