Abstract

A call filtering device enables user to program only the telephone numbers from which they would like to receive calls, thereby eliminating nuisance calls and wrong numbers. The device may include a display for displaying the incoming number of a caller and for programming the unit and may also include a keypad. A SIM card reader may included, thereby enabling telephone numbers to be copied to the device's memory from a mobile phone address book. The device may be arranged to play back a programmed voice message informing callers that unsolicited calls are not accepted and may also include a PIN override feature enabling callers to contact the subscriber from an unrecognized telephone number by entry of a PIN. Call filtering may be performed according to user defined criteria such as time of day, selective barring or allowance only of numbers stored in an address book.

Description

Description
Programmable Telephone Call Filtering System Nuisance calls from wrong numbers, telesales and fraudsters can be an annoying fact of life today. It is estimated that the elderly are the victims of over 160m of fraud, by phone calls, every year. Even with the advent of services such as BT Privacy and TPS (Telephone Preference Service) these nuisance calls still disturb residents regularly.
This document describes the proposed features of a residential programmable telephone call filtering system to eliminate nuisance calls and wrong numbers and allowing the user to programme only the numbers they wish to receive. The system incorporates a PIN (Personal Identification Number) feature is included to allow calls from locations, by allowed users, other than programmed.
Key Features * 2 x 16 character display -displays the number of the caller and used to programme the unit.
* Caller ID facility to interpret the caller's telephone number.
* Automatic pick up and voice message informing the caller that the user does not accept calls from unrecognised numbers.
* Address book to store names and numbers * Keypad to manually enter allowed caller' numbers into memory.
* SIM card reader to easily copy numbers from a mobile phone address book to the unit's memory.
* PIN identification feature to accept calls from a user that knows the PIN and is calling from an unusual location (e.g. payphone).
* Programmable filter that allows calls to be filtered by: o Time of day or o Allow all calls' or o Selective barring (e.g. all international calls barred) or o Only allow calls from address book Figure 1 shows the proposed design, as it would be connected to the telephone line and regular telephone.
The telephone call filtering system will be a microprocessor controlled electronic unit incorporating an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) to display relevant data. The unit will contain a printed circuit board with input and output connections for the telephone line and telephone.
The unit will be encased in a plastic moulding with the LCD visible on the top surface.
