Abstract

A VoIP system comprises a VoIP unit for connecting a handset to a network, a router (eg ADSL router 1, figure 1) for connection to the Internet and at least two VoIP servers 42, 43 on different ports. Upon detection of failure in the communications between the VoIP unit and a first VoIP server 42, the VoIP unit is arranged to switch to a different port and thus use a backup VoIP server 43. The VoIP unit may be arranged to periodically connect with a web server (12, fig.3) in order to receive updates for firmware or hardware, or for other types of requests, and it may also frequently contact the VoIP server over a selected port in order to keep port mapping alive (NAT keep-alive). Failure of communications between the VoIP unit and the VoIP server may thus be detected upon the condition that the web server continues to receive communications whilst the VoIP server does not. Detection of such a condition would suggest that the VoIP unit was powered up (since it was still communicating with the web server) but that communications on the first port were faulty. Switching from the first port to the second port may thus be used to circumvent this fault. The VoIP unit may be arranged to periodically alternate between the two servers, switching more frequently when further errors are detected. Alternatively, the VoIP unit may switch from a first to a second server during periods of time when the first server is known to perform backups.
