Abstract

A motor vehicle wing or overtaking mirror is extendable to widen the field of vision of a driver. The mirror comprises a main mirror 1 and a secondary mirror 8 which is attached to the main mirror 1 by means of a hinge 2. When not in use the secondary mirror 8 folds to the back of the main mirror 1 by means of a vertical hinge 2. When in an extended position, a cover 5, which is attached to the front of the secondary mirror 8, slides in front of the main mirror 1 to hold the two mirrors together. The cover 5 may incorporate brushes 6 to clean the mirrors. The mirror may have integral dampers to minimise vibration. The mirror may be manually or mechanically extended.

Description

DESCRIPTION.
MOTOR VEIIICLE WING, OR OVERTAKiNG MIRROR This invention is for the purpose of attaining an improved rear view from a mo- tor vehicle when towing a trailer or similar device. The improved safety real-ised from the improved visibility is the main object of the device. The basic concept is of an extendable wing/overtaking mirror which may be extended by manual, electrical, hydraulic, air pressure or other mechanical means.
MANUAL VERSION
The attached drawings are for a manual type. This design will allow a perma-nently mounted wing mirror to open on a hinge, to extend the mirror by its full original length.
The current trend is to fit add on mirrors which vibrate to the extent that visi-bility is impaired. With this design the mirror will be securely held in the closed position by a spring loaded clip or similar device. There is a cover to the front facing elevation which is held in a groove to the top and base of the mirror frame work. When opened on the hinge, the meeting faces are also held to-gether with a spring loaded clip or similar. The cover will then slide over the inner section of exposed mirror along similar grooves, aligned with the grooves on what has now become the outer section. The cover will not slide to the full length of the inner mirror. This will create an overlap at the hinged faces, creat-ing an additional source of rigidity. With dampers fitted appropriately, vibration would be removed. There will be nylon brushes fitted to either end of the slid-ing cover. These will assist in cleaning the mirrors when activated. The mirror glass will be adjustable by manual or mechanical means.
AUTOMATED VERSION
A mechanical devise would extend the mirror from its original position to an extended position either on a similar hinged method or on a sliding or pivotal system assisted by rams, cogs, pulleys or other mechanical means. The shape and size of the whole device would be varied to suit the requirements of the various vehicle designs.

Claims (1)

  1. MOTOR VEHICLE WING, OR OVERTAKING MIRROR.
    CLAIMS.
The extendable mirror shall be a standard and permanent part to a motor vehicle and not an added attachment.
The mirror is an extendable mirror which will widen the visibility field of the driver of the vehicle it is fitted to, thus creating a line of vision beyond the width of a towed vehicle or a wide load.
The mirror shall be extendable to a size compatible with the size of the towing vehicle in relation to the towed vehicle.
The mirror shall be manually extended or mechanically extended.
The mirror shall have glass which adjusts angle of vision either manually or mechanically.
The shape / style /size of the mirror will vary to suit various vehicle designs.
The mounts of the mirror will vary to suit various vehicle designs.
The mirror shall have integral dampers to eliminate vibration.
