Abstract

A joist hanger with an increased contact area with the joist and a plurality of apertures 2 for use in securing the joist. A joist hanger comprising a stand off from the supporting wall to enable the fitting of a damp-proofing insulation layer 3 between the wall and the joist. It may comprise a metal moulding and may include a strong fishtail / dovetail 4 to prevent rotational forces and act as a lateral restraint. A raised or tilted cap (7, fig 2) may be included to prevent the incursion of moisture from the inner face of the wall to the joist. This may be a plastic cover which may be snapped or glued onto the metal moulding.

Description

Improvements relating to timber support and restraint in buildings
Where timber, such as floor joists, beams, etc either natural timber or manufactured or composite timber is employed in masonary buildings it is often fixed and supported off the walls by means ofjoists hangers. Also the timber is often employed to provide lateral restraint to the supporting and adjacent walls and this is provided by means of separate restraint straps fixed to the timber and hooked or otherwise fixed into or over the masonary wall.
The invention herein described is to combine the support function ofajoist hanger with the restraint function of separate straps, into a single restraint hanger device and to provide for improvement in the structural action of the device on the supporting wall and also to provide for an insulation buffer/bridge between the timber and masonary.
A typical and preferred embodiment of the device is herein described with reference to Drawing No I Fig 1.
The holding U shaped channel I into which the joist or beam is placed has a much greater base length and side support area in contract with the joist than conventional joist hanger. Also the sides have increased nail hole provision 2.
The purpose of this is twofold. Firstly to provide a secure fixing to the joist to enable the device to act in tension with the joist and provide lateral restraint when the device is suitably fixed to the supporting wall.
Secondly, to provide a firm secure fixing to prevent any loading on the joist, creating any rotational action or force on the device and hence transmitted to the supporting wall. In conventional joist hangers the contact area and fixings are not sufficient to illuminate this action or enable the joist hanger to transmit structural tension.
A further need to avoid this rotational force or action, is the need to provide an insulation bridge/buffer between the joists and the supporting wall. An insulation and damp proofing bat 3 is placed and fixed between the masonary wall and the supporting device. This bat could be provided with downward and outward sloping ridges or grooves to deflect any moisture outwards.
A strong fishtail or dovetail 4 built dotted into the motor bed would enable the joists hanger to act as a cantilever and prevent rotational forces and also act as a lateral restraint. cD
A further improvement to the design of this support device and joist hangers in general, to assist in the placing and fixing of the joist into hangers when they are in position on the wall is herein described with reference to drawing No I Fig 2.
The base plate 5 and one vertical side of the hanger 6 would be longer than the remaining side, this would enable the carpenter to place or lodge and lay out, either from below or from a distance, the ends of the joists onto the protruding base plate up against the protruding side plate, stopping it from falling off or falling over, prior to the time when the carpenter can get into a position, a closer position or a position at the further end of the joist, where he can push the joist securely home into the hanger.
To prevent any moisture on the inner face of the wall bridging over the joist hanger a raised or tilted cap 7 sloping downwards and outwards to the wall could be incorporated. This may be a plastic snap/glued on cover or part of the metal moulding.

Claims (2)
