Abstract

An adjustable seat belt restraint comprising of a webbing belt 10, attached to an anchor clip 12, which then passes through an adjusting buckle 14. This buckle is attached to a second piece of webbing 16, which in turn is attached to a sliding locator clip 18. Once assembled, during it's manufacture, through the adjusting buckle 14, the end of the webbing belt 10 is turned over on itself and sewn together 20, in such a manor that the whole unit cannot be unassembled, thus ensuring that it cannot be subsequently reassembled Incorrectly. In use, the anchor clip 12 is attached to the lower seat belt anchorage point and the sliding locator clip 18 is attached to the diagonal of a convention seat belt. The diagonal strap is thus prevented from rising higher than desired.

Description

ADJUSTABLE RESTRAINT
This Invention relates to an adjustable seat belt restraint for the lap and diagonal type standard seat belt.
Since the Introduction of this type of seat belt, many ltves have been saved.
as well as many Injuries being prevented or made less severe.
However In some cases where children less than 35 cm high1 using a standard seat belt have been Involved In accidents, Injury has been caused by the diagonal seat belts being too high and Injuring the theb necks.
Booster Seats are now available In order to raise children to the requked height so that the diagonal belt passes In front of theb shoulder and not In front of thek necks.
These Booster Seats are both cumbersome and expensive and cause problems for dilvers who do only occasionally transport children.
This Invention provides a far less expensive and less cumbersome solution to whole problem, by altering the position of the diagonal seat belt, Instead of altering the position of the child.
The adjustable seat belt restraint (hereafter referred to as the restraint') simply reduces the angle of the diagonal belt so that It posses across the chest of the child and over the shoulder rather than In front of the child's neck.
The restraint comprises of an adjustable belt, one end of which Is attached to the kwver anchor point of the car seot belt, the other end being dipped over the diagonal part of the seat belt. In such a manner that the clip can slide up and down along the diagonal belt. The clip, by virtue of It's' design can be easily slipped onto the diagonal belt, but only removed with some difficulty by an adult.
Once In position the restraint can be left In place, so that each individual user can accurately adjust the position of the diagonal belt to suit the height. This also allows short adult passengers to have a more comfortable and safer envWonment.
A specific embodiment of the Invention wilt now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings In which:-FIgures 1 -3 show the technical details of the adjustable seat belt restraint.
FIgure 4 Illustrates the position of a standard seat belt being used by an adult without the use of the restraint.
FIgure 5 demonstrates the position of a child using a standard seat belt without using the restraint.
FIgure 6 shows the adjustable seat belt in use on a standard seat belt when being used by a child.
This demonstrates how the position of the dla9onal belt can be positioned and adjusted so that the diagonal belt no longer passes in front of the child's neck. For clarity, the relrInt has been shaded In this drawing (FIgure 4).
