Abstract

A foot drop aid which is adjustable, comfortable to wear and virtually undetectable under trousers. Preferably the device comprises two strips of hook and loop tape 1 which encircle the ankle and overlap 4 to allow adjustment. The ankle strap is attached to a length of elastic 2 which terminates in a hook 3 which may be fastened to the shoe laces or a central catch sewn onto the shoe. The device may lift and support the foot to prevent the user from tripping and falling and may also aid the elasticity of the ankle joint.

Description

DESCRIPTION
FOOT-DROP AID
Many people suffer from a medical problem which disables them from the ability to tilt their foot up-wards from the ankle -a condition from which I suffer and which can be caused by the severe "pinching" of the sciatic nerve in the lower back.
Having tried many various orthotic aid recommendations with little suc-cess I decided to devise my own contraption to help prevent my regular falls from tripping.
The fairly simple device, which is made up with two over-lapping strips of 5cm velcro material (1) which encircle the anlde, is attached by sewn-on round elastic (2) and a hook (3) to tightened parallel shoe laces or, in the case of slip-on shoes, to a central catch especially sewn onto the footwear.
As can be seen from the following illustrations the device is simply adjusted by releasing, slackening/tightening and re-aligning the overlap-ping velcro (4) and this has the effect of lifting the semi-disabled foot just enough to prevent the sufferer from catching a foot and taking a tumble.

Claims (1)

  1. FOOT-DROP AID
The invention which I wish to protect is simple and easy to manufacture.
It was devised by myself following neurosurgery to my back and subse-quent visits to hospital orthotics department where various clumsy devices proved unable to comfortably improve my own problem with a "dropped" foot.
This device is comfortable to wear and is easily adjustable without neces-sarily being removed from the wearer's ankle nor does it require footwear necessarily to be taken off.
It can be adjusted to conform to most male and female footwear and can, with colour adaptation, be virtually camouflaged under trousers.
