Abstract

An A.C. mains adaptor 4 delivers a low voltage current to a rechargeable battery 5 which is connected to a transducer 6, which operates a circuit breaker 7 when activated by a signal from a modified remote control handset, disconnecting the mains electricity supply from the appliance. A further signal from the handset reverses the circuit breaker with power from the battery and reconnects the mains electricity supply to the appliance. The apparatus may be directly wired to, or incorporated within, the appliance. This allows the appliance to be operated by remote control but avoids wasting energy in a standby mode.

Description

Energy Saving System for Remote Controlled Electrical Appliances.

This invention relates to a system of energy saving in electrical appliances which are remotely controlled by a wireless transmission device.

The present methods of remotely controlling electrical appliances require a constant supply of mains electricity in order to maintain the standby mode of the appliance.

In the current climate; with an acute need to reduce the production of greenhouse gasses and subsequent global warming, any saving of electrical energy is vital.

The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus at the point of the mains connection, controlled by a wireless transmission device, which will connect and disconnect the mains electricity supply to the appliance.

In one convenient arrangement a standard television receiver remote control handset may be modified to operate the apparatus, thereby placing the receiver in the standby mode.

The same handset will then select the various programmes of the appliance, and further use of the modified switch will disconnect the power supply, greatly reducing the energy consumption of the appliance, while still providing am immediate return to the standby mode when required.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figuire 1 shows a front elevation of the apparatus, assembled ready for use, with the appliance plug I connected. A receptor with a signal lamp 2 is located to receive a wireless signal.

Figure 2 shows a standard wireless remote control handset which has been modified to also control the apparatus by the addition of an extra detector switch 3, attenuated to the receptor of the apparatus.

Figure 3 shows the apparatus in perspective, with a standard three pin plug and socket to connect the apparatus and the appliance to the mains electricity supply.

Figure 4 shows a cutaway sectional view of the apparatus to illustrate the internal components.

In figure 4, an A C mains adaptor 4 delivers a low voltage current to a re-chargeable batteiy 5 which is in turn connected to a transducer 6. A signal from the handset switch 3 to the receptor 2 activates a reciprocal circuit breaker 7 and disconnects the mains supply from the appliance.Alternatively, the circuit breaker may be located to disconnect the mains supply from the apparatus; utilising the battery to supply power for re-connection, resulting in virtually nil consumption of energy. A further signal from the handset will re-connect the appliance, placing it in the standby mode. The handset may then be employed to control the various programmes of the appliance.

The system may be further enhanced by placing all the components within a single housing, utilizing micro circuitry, which may include a timing device, to emulate the functions of the mains adaptor and the circuit breaker, to provide a single compact unit, directly wired to or incorporated within the appliance.

The apparatus is suitable for use with any electrical appliance which is remotely controlled, and meets the modern concept of energy saving and environmental protection, achieving the aim of reducing electricity costs and energy consumption. -
