Abstract
A free-standing electronic information device, or information kiosk, which allows the PC-panel display 1 to be moved to a preferred viewing position by manually repositioning the display in a single 'one-touch' action. By tilting and lifting as required, the display can be moved such that it is ergonomically accessible from a broad range of heights. Preferably the 'one-touch' display positioning mechanism allows the display to be tilted, adjusted in height, rotated horizontally, and extended towards or away from the user. Preferably damping and counter-balancing devices are incorporated that assist the movement of the display and provide resistance to unintentional movements.
Description
<p>INCLUSIVE INFORMATION KIOSK</p>
<p>The invention relates to a free-standing electronic information delivery device, or information kiosk, of the type that includes an electronic display and a computing device connected to a source of information that can be accessed using an electronic pointing device such as a mouse or touchscreen. Such an information kiosk may be located to allow access to information for large numbers and diverse types of user.</p>
<p>Such users may vary in stature and physical ability and may be sitting or standing.</p>
<p>Such information kiosks are well-known but suffer from the disadvantage that the display position is usually fixed at a height and tilt that is a compromise, being ideal only for a standing person of an average size. Problems that arise from an incorrect display position include poor display visibility, a parallax problem whereby users often select the wrong onscreen options, and ergonomic issues that could give a user physical discomfort or even lead to musculoskeletal disorders.</p>
<p>Some alternative information kiosks provide height adjustment by means of an electric motor, but none have height and tilt adjustable as a one-touch' mechanism.</p>
<p>Further, none allow rotation and distance adjustment as part of the same one-touch' mechanism. One-touch' means that a user can grasp the display and move it to the preferred viewing position with a simple action accomplished by a single touch.</p>
<p>An object of this invention is to provide all information kiosk including a display panel, fixed to a one-touch' display positioning mechanism. The display can be moved such that it is accessible from a broad range of heights, directions, and distances.</p>
<p>Accordingly, this invention provides a free-standing electronic information device, or information kiosk, which allows the display to be moved directly to a preferred viewing position by manually repositioning the display in a single one-touch' action.</p>
<p>By tilting and lifting as required, the display can be moved such that it is ergonomically accessible from a broad range of heights.</p>
<p>Preferably the one-touch' display positioning mechanism allows the display to be tilted, adjusted in height, rotated horizontally, and extended towards or away from the user.</p>
<p>Preferably damping and counter-balancing devices are incorporated that assist the movement of the display and provide resistance to unintentional movements.</p>
<p>Optionally the one-touch' mechanism could incorporate a release control that prevents unintentional movements.</p>
<p>Preferably the main structural members of the display positioning mechanism are made from metal and hollow, allowing the damping, counter-balancing, cabling, power supply, and networking equipment to be contained wholly or partially within.</p>
<p>Preferably the moveable display incorporates a computing device in the form of a rugged touchscreen panel-PC, comprising a personal computer and LCD monitor in a single unit and connected to the Internet via a wired or wireless connection.</p>
<p>Preferably the computing device consists, or incorporates one or more, of the following: a PC, a thin client or web computer, a media player, an electronic entertainment device, a payment facility, an electronic reader or scanning device, a telephony device, a games machine, or a device that delivers television or video content.</p>
<p>Preferably the information accessible through the information kiosk is presented via a software web browser, and resides in local or remote digital storage.</p>
<p>Preferably a shelf is provided such that it can be rotated horizontally for improved access.</p>
<p>A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of the whole information kiosk.</p>
<p>Figure 2 shows a plan view of the base components only.</p>
<p>Figure 3 shows a plan view of the shelf only.</p>
<p>As shown in Figure 1, the information kiosk comprises a PC-panel display I mounted on a display positioning mechanism.</p>
<p>The PC-panel display I is fixed to bracket 2, rotating about spindle 3. The tilt of the display is constrained and damped by rotary damper 4.</p>
<p>The height of the PC-panel display I is affected by the telescopic sections 5 and 6.</p>
<p>The upper telescopic section 5 can travel through collar 7 into lower telescopic section 6.</p>
<p>The telescopic travel is constrained and damped by gas spring 8. Gas spring 8 is fixed inside the lower telescopic section 6 and is connected at one end to spindle II in mounting bracket 10 and at the other end to fixing point 9 on the upper telescopic section 5.</p>
<p>The PC-panel display 1 can be moved closer or further away from a user by means of rotation around spindle 11. The rotation is constrained and damped by gas spring 14, additional damping is provided by a rotary damper 12. Gas spring 14 is fixed to column 1 3 at point 1 5 and lower telescopic section at point 16.</p>
<p>The PC-panel display I can be rotated around spindle 20. Column 13 and bracket 10 are mounted on plinth 1 7, which rotates around spindle 20 and is supported by bearings 1 8 on fixed base plate 19. The rotation of the display is constrained and damped by rotary damper 21.</p>
<p>Figure 2 shows a plan view of the base components only. The plinth 7 bolts to the bracket tO and column 13 via holes 23 and the base plate bolts to the floor via holes 22.</p>
<p>Figure 3 shows a plan view of shelf 24 only. The shelf 24 is held in place by bearings (shown in Figure 1) and can rotate around column 1 3 (also shown in Figure 1).</p>
<p>Column 13 goes through hole 26 in shelf 24.</p>

- <p>CLAIMS</p><p>I. A free-standing electronic information device, or information kiosk, which allows the display to be moved directly to a preferred viewing position by manually repositioning the display in a single one-touch' action. By tilting and lifting as required, the display can be moved such that it is ergononhiCallY accessible from a broad range of heights.</p><p>2. An information kiosk as claimed in claim I where the display panel can also be rotated horizontally such that it is accessible from a broad range of approach directions.</p><p>3. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the display panel can also be moved such that it is accessible from a broad range of di stances.</p><p>4. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the display panel incorporates a touchscreefl.</p><p>5. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates a personal computer.</p><p>6. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates a thin-client computer or web computer.</p><p>7. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates a media player.</p><p>8. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates an entertainment device.</p><p>9. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates a payment facility.</p><p>10. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates an electronic reader or scanning device.</p><p>11. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates a telephony device.</p><p>12. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk incorporates a ganies machine.</p><p>13. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim where the kiosk provides access to television programmes or video.</p><p>14. An information kiosk as claimed in any preceding claim with a shelf mounted below the screen that can rotate around the post.</p><p>15. An information kiosk substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.</p>
