Abstract

243,947. Giles, A. C., and Tanks & Drums, Ltd. Feb. 27, 1925. Hollow - warc. - Longitudinally corrugated metal cylinders, drums &c. have their ends flattened in regular folds in order that the heads may be jointed liquid-tight to the bodies without the use of solder. A sheet metal cylinder formed in the usual way is passed between dies 2, 3, Figs. 7 and 8 of which the lower die 3, is fixed upon a rubber &c. support 8 while the upper die 2 is reciprocated vertically, adjustment being effected by a wedge 6. The first stroke of the upper die corrugates the whole length of the cylindrical body except for a small portion between flattened parts 2a, 3d of the dies; the body is then fed forward one corrugation at a time so that the ends of the corrugations come successively between the flattened portions 2a, 3d, a rib 3b of the lower die being shaped as shown so that the flattening is gradual as indicated in Fig. 1. When all the corrugations have had their ends flattened except the last two a part 3c of the lower die of corresponding width to the flattened portions 2a, 3d is slid sideways into an inoperative position so that the flattened ends are not again corrugated, and the blank is then fed forwards to complete the flattening. The head is seamed on and a hoop 10 arranged as shown in Fig. 11. For producing bilged barrels the dies may be curved.
