Abstract

A flexible mobile terminal is designed to comprise reconfigurable modules, e.g. components 131-134 of the Generic Mobility Component (GMC) 130, which are implemented by one or more sets of communication protocols 152-1, 152-2, 152-3 to receive an incoming data control packet 120. A generic data control processing means is designed through decomposition of the protocols to be employed, e.g. identify similarities and differences in the protocols, and a model of computation for the generic data control processing means is defined. A dynamic reconfiguration procedure for reconfiguring the reconfigurable modules is specified and a specification for a Generic Component Manager 110 is defined. The mobile terminal designed by this method can modify at run-time the communication protocols it employs so that it is able to connect to more than one access network, and intelligently multi-home and perform load balancing of the various applications it supports.
