Abstract
243,784. Cox, F. B. Aug. 28, 1924. Wire resistances, encased and cored; localizing heating.-In a heating element wherein the heating effect is localized by increasing the crosssectional area of certain parts of the resistance wire, the latter is helically wound on an insulating core, is .arranged between pressure surfaces, and is constructed so that the full heat is only generated in those portions of the wire in contact with the surface through which it is desired to transmit heat. The increase in cross-sectional area of the wire may be effected by deposition of copper thereon. In the drawings the parts of the wire B in which the full heat is generated are shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 shows a heater wherein the wire B is wound on a hollow core A provided at intervals with radiating fins C<2>. An air-heater, Fig. 3<A>, comprises a split tube A through which the air is passed, the tube being surrounded with a mica sheet on which the resistance wire is wound and a make-up piece a<2> being inserted in the split. In Fig. 4 the wire is wound on a triangular core pressed against the sides of a recess in a water heater C3 by spring pressure. In Fig. 5 two heating elements are held between the two halves of a hot-water radiator. In Fig. 6 the heating element is held against the bottom of a kettle F by a spring f<3> and plate f<2>. Fig. 7 shows a heating element adapted to be secured to a vessel to be heated in which the increase in cross-section of the heating wire is obtained bv using a core D' in contact with a core D wound with a copper ribbon d<1>, the resistance wire B being wound about the cores when in contact.
