Description

Title: Knife with Torch Compartment The present invention relates to a
knife with a torch compartment.

When engaged in many leisure activities it is often desirable to have a knife and a torch to perform various tasks in poor light conditions.

It has been known to provide a knife with a torch compartment in the handle which shines a light either side of the knife blade, but not light on the cutting edge of the blade. Also such known knives have a hollow handle to receive the torch which can weaken the joint between the knife blade and the handle.

The invention seeks to provide an improved knife with torch compartment.

According to the present invention there is provided a knife with torch compartment comprising: a) a knife blade component, b) a knife handle component, c) a sheath to slide over the handle component, and d) a torch compartment to hold a torch inside the sheath adjacent the knife handle component.

Preferably the knife handle component comprises a U-shaped channel to receive at least part of the handle of a torch.

Preferably the sheath is in the form of a tube which slides over the knife handle component. The sheath may provide a hand grip for the knife. Preferably releasable securement means are provided to lock the sheath to the knife handle component. The releasable securement means may be in the form of a plate which abuts the end of the sheath and which is releasably connected to the end of the knife handle component remote from the blade. Preferably the sheath includes a "cut-out" at an end to accommodate a torch head.

Preferably the torch compartment supports a torch such that, when the torch is on, light emitting from the torch is directed at a cutting edge of knife blade component.

Preferably a guard is provided between the knife handle component and the knife blade component. The guard may include an aperture through which light from the torch can pass.

Preferably the knife handle component and the knife blade component are integrally formed.

Preferably the knife handle component and the knife blade component are integrally formed from metal such as stainless steel.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded view of a knife with torch compartment and a torch, and Figure 2 shows an assembled view of a knife with torch compartment and a torch.

Referring to the drawings there is shown a knife with torch compartment 1. Knife with torch compartment I has a knife blade component 2 and a knife handle component 3 integrally formed of stainless steel. Knife handle component 3 has an elongate U-shaped channel 3A along its length to receive a part of the handle of a torch as described below. A finger guard 4 is provided between the knife handle component 2 and the knife blade component 3. Finger guard 4 has an aperture 4A therein.

A sheath in the form of an elliptical hollow rubber tube 5 is provided to slide over the handle component. Tube 5 has ribs 5A thereon to provide a good hand grip and an L-shaped cut-out 5B.

Releasable securement means are provided to lock the sheath to the knife handle component. The releasable securement means is in the form of a plate 6 which abuts the end of the sheath and which is releasably connected to the end of the knife handle component 3 remote from the blade by a thumb screw 6A.

A torch compartment 7 is provided to hold a torch 10 inside the sheath adjacent the knife handle component, with the torch handle 1OA supported in U-shaped channel 3A. Cut-out 5B accommodates the torch head lOB. Torch 10 has an on/off switch 1OC.

Torch compartment 7 supports torch 10 such that, when the torch is on, light emitting from the torch is directed through guard aperture 4A at a biconcave cutting edge 2A of knife blade component.

In use, the knife I can be used as an ordinary knife in good light conditions. In poor light conditions, the knife can be used with the torch 10 "on" so a user can see what is being cut with the knife whilst only using one hand. Also the torch 10 can be removed and used separately by sliding off the sheath 5 and removing the torch.

Knife blade component 2 may include a serrated edge 2B. Also grooves 2C,2D may be provided either side of the blade component 2 to allow passage of air along the blade component when the blade component is inserted in an object.

The rubber sheath 5 provides insulation and grip for the knife handle component, and provides a friction grip for the torch handle 1 OA.

It is envisaged that the knife with torch compartment could be sold in combination with a torch, or the knife with torch compartment could be sold separately to a torch. The torch could be designed especially for the knife with torch compartment, or the knife with torch compartment could be designed to take a variety of shapes of existing torches.

It is also envisaged that the knife blade component and knife handle component cold be fitted to an elongate shaft to create a spear. In this respect one end of such as a shaft could be accommodated in the U-shaped channel 3A and/or aperture 4A of guard 4.

The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.

Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
