Abstract
An end cap 2 for use on an opened container of comestibles, such as biscuits, is a sliding fit on said container and may be positioned between a closed condition, wherein the container is sealed, and an open condition, wherein the contents of the container are accessible. To this end the end cap includes an access portal 10 that is positioned, when the end cap is in its open condition, to enable access to the contents of the container, as shown. The end cap may be made from a flexible plastic composition and is preferably transparent or translucent. Printed text or images may be included on the end cap relating to the contents thereof or to other promotional material. It will be evident that the contents of a container may be viewed through the transparent or translucent lid of the end cap when the end cap is in a closed condition. The access portal may be through the side wall of the cap, between its closed end 8 and two un-joined apices 16.
Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN AN END CAP

This invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to end caps for facilitating the ready access and sealing of the contents of a container and is particularly concerned with Improvements in an end cap for use with a rigid container in order to facilitate the ready access to comestible contents thereof and to thereafter effect the air tight sealing of the container to protect the remaining contents Comestible products are often marketed in cylindrical packages closed at one end thereof by a conventional closure cap or the like. Access to the contents is made by removing the closure cap and tipping the container to allow the contents to fall through the open end of the container Normal extraction of the contents can be difficult and thereafter the remaining contents fall to the bottom of the contaIner making access thereto impossible unless the container is again tipped or inverted to allow the contents to fall to the open end thereof.

If the container is tipped or inverted as aforesaid, the contents fall to the end of the container causing breakage of the contents, especially chipped potato products, resulting in spillage of crumbs and products of less than aesthetic appearance when finally extracted from the container Rigid containers are well known for packaging frangible comestibles, for example biscuits and crisps, in which containers a tray-like box is provided with an external sleeve of complementary configuration whereby access to the contents of the container is achieved by sliding the tray-like box from said sleeve and closure of the container to reseal said contents therein is achieved by sliding the tray-like box into the sleeve.

The disadvantage of such packaging is that it is formed as two separate parts thereby adding to the cost thereof On the other hand, with containers configured as a cylinder, access to the contents thereof is made by merely removing an end closure cap as aforesaid with the attendant disadvantages regarding easy access and spillage of the contents It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an improved end cap whereby the above mentioned disadvantages are overcome or at least mitigated Thus, the present invention conveniently provides an end cap for sliding attachment to the open end of a container, the end cap comprising a closed end and being of complementary configuration to the container, characterised in that, in a closed condition, the end cap extends part way along the length of the container to secure the contents thereof, the end cap being provided with an access port extending peripherally around a wall of the end cap to enable access to contents of the container when the end cap is in an open condition remote from said closed condition but in which open condition the end cap is still attached to the container In one preferred embodiment provided by the present invention, the end cap is formed from a flexible material to enable the end cap to pass over, in use, peripheral ridges of a container thereby ensuring that the end cap is retained in sliding relationship with said container Conveniently, the end cap is cylindrical in cross-section for application in use to a container of complementary configuration and the end cap may be formed from a plastic composition that preferably provides an end cap that is transparent or translucent whereby, when in use, the contents of a container are clearly visible through said access port In a further preferred embodiment provided by the present invention, the access port extends peripherally around said wall for 180 degrees to ensure adequate access to the contents of the container when the end cap is in its open condition Conveniently, the wall of the end cap remote from said closed end thereof is formed with two un-joined apexes to thereby facilitate the ease of application, in use, of an end cap to a container There now follows, by way of example of the invention, a detailed description, which is to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:Figure 1 is an upper perspective view of a container with an end cap of the invention shown in a closed condition, Figure 2 is an upper perspective view corresponding to that of Figure 1 with the end cap shown in an open condition and, Figure 3 is an upper perspective view of the end cap illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 The present invention generally provides an end cap 2 for application, in use, to an open end 4 of a container 6 of comestible products, not shown, whereby access to the contents of the container is readily facilitated together with provision for resealing the container 6 to maintain the freshness of the contents Specifically, the end cap 2, see Figures 1 to 3, is cylindrical in shape so that, in use, it is a sliding fit over an end portion of a container 6, see Figures 1 and 2 The end cap 2 comprises a closed end 8 and an access port 10 that extends peripherally around a wall 12 of the end cap 2 for 180 degrees, see especially Figure 3 An end portion 14 of the end cap 2 remote from the closed end 8 is provided by two un-joined apexes 16 for a purpose to be described hereinafter The end cap 2 is formed from a plastic composition such that the end product is transparent or translucent, or sufficiently so to allow light to pass there-through for a purpose to be described When the contents, viz biscuits or potato crisps, are to be accessed from a new container thereof a conventional closure end cap is removed from the container and the contents removed by inverting the container, however, by using the end cap 2 of the present invention the spillage and breakages normally incurred will be a thing of the past After removing the conventional closure cap, not shown, the end cap 2 of the present invention is applied to the container 6 simply by sliding the end cap over the open end 4 of the container into the position shown in Figure 2, that is an open condition in which the contents, viz the the biscuits or crisps may be readily accessed through the access port 10 of the end cap 2 It will be appreciated that retention of the end cap 2 on the container 6 is effected by the gripping nature of the two un-joined apexes 16 that have a natural tendency to spring inwardly one toward the other.

When sufficient contents have been removed from the container 6, the end cap 2 is slid along the container 6 into the position shown in Figure 1, that is a closed condition in which the contents are sealed and remain in an edible condition As the end cap 2 is formed from transparent or translucent material the contents of the container may clearly be seen through the closed end 8 thereof when the end cap is in its closed condition While the end cap 2 is shown as a tray-like product, it is envisaged that the end portion 14 may be formed as a closed cylinder, thus, the access port 10 would be formed as a closed aperture instead of being as shown in the drawings herewith It is also envisaged within the scope of the invention that the access port 10 may be positioned to overlie an access port, not shown, provided in the cylindrical container by twisting the end cap through 180 degrees to align the two access ports, closure and sealing of the container 6 being effected by twisting the end cap through 180 degrees to place the two access ports 180 degrees out of alignment one with the other The fabric of the container 6 plays no real part in the invention other than being the vehicle for enabling its contents to be readily accessed using the end cap 2 of the invention Thus, the container may be made from any rigid or semi-rigid material commensurate with providing a container with adequate strength for purpose From the above, it will be appreciated that the end cap 2 of the present invention may be used on successive containers of comestible products until the contents of the containers are depleted In addition, printed text relating to the contents of the container or images of a promotional nature may be printed on the end cap 2 It is envisaged that other modifications may be made to the end cap of the present invention within the monopoly claimed herein
