Abstract

The invention relates to a system 1 for monitoring and controlling an electrical or electronic device, in the embodiment a two-way radio frequency (RF)-controlled on/off power socket extension 2, comprising a computing device 3 separate from and remote from the electronic device 2 in the sense of being at a separate location from the location of the electronic device. The arrangement of the system 1 is such that there is a bi-directional wireless communication path between the computing device 3 and the electronic device 2 to form a bi-directional network. The computing device 3 has secure access enabled by USB SMART card 4 via a SMART card reader. There is access via the Internet 5 between the computing device 3 and say a lap-top 6 which has a RF transmission Dongle 7 comprising a two-way RF transmission mounted in the lap-top 6. There is also an RF controller unit 8, remote from any other item of the system, also operable by RF signal.

Description

A SYSTEM FOR BI-DIRECTIONAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

The invention relates to a system for bi-wireless communication, particularly for monitoring and controlling an electrical or electronic device.

There is a need to provide for remotely monitoring and controlling of electronic devices such as for example an AC or DC powered extension socket. At present, there are available apparatuses, but they are operated by hand-held controller units (RCU), they caimot be operated by a computer, nor can they be operated from a location remote from the device(s), they use one-way communication in that the electronic device receives an RF command from the RCU, and, importantly, owing to the one-way nature of the communication, the host computing device is not able to know or obtain information from the said device(s).

It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.

According to the invention, there is provided a system for monitoring and controlling an electrical or electronic device, comprising a computing device and a separate electrical or electronic device, the arrangement being such that there is a bi-directional wireless communication path between the computing device and the electrical or electronic device to form a bi-directional network.

Thus, using the invention it is possible to provide bi-directional remote wireless communication between an electronic device and a computer or similar device, by means of an RF signal.

A system embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows schematically a system embodying the invention.

Referring to the drawing there is shown a system 1 for monitoring and controlling an electrical or electronic device, in the embodiment a two-way radio frequency (RF)-controlled onloff power socket extension 2, comprising a computing device 3 separate from and remote from the electronic device 2 in the sense of being at a separate location from the location of the electronic device.

In the system the RF signals are indicated at X'.

In use, the device is monitored and controlled via sending and receiving information using RF signals. Electronic device(s), including but not limited to an AC or DC powered extension socket(s), form a wireless network and are monitored and controlled by means of the computing device(s), the latter including but not limited to computer, pocket PDA, wireless phone, CPU, micro-controller unit, etc. Such computing device is at the same or different location from the device. The device has a unique ID and is linked up with the computing device to form a hi-directional wireless communication network. The device and the computing device can communicate with one another via the internet, in the embodiment shown.

The set of materials or equipment for the above functions may include: -a) one electronic part (RF-MCU Set) composed of RF transceiver and MCU functions for each electronic device; b) Software in a computing device for use to receive, process or send information to or from the device on the Network and to establish remote access to the device via the Internet; c) An electronic SMART card (SMART), to be inserted into a USB SMART card reader, when plugged in a computing device, for use to establish secure access to operate the monitoring and controlling functions; d) A wired or wireless computing substituting device (CSD) for use to monitor and control the device to perform parallel, sequential, or substituting functions same or similar to the Software in the computing device; all information received, processed or sent is synchronized wirelessly with the computing device running the Software; e) A transmission device (Dongle), when connected to a computing device: (i) for use to receive signals from the Software, and transmit the same via RF signals to the device; and (ii) For use to receive information via RF signals from the device then forwarding to the computing device.

Thus, the system, when used in home/office/building/factory, allows electronic appliance(s) to be monitored and controlled, at anytime and from anywhere, by means of commands issued by a human or a machine using the Internet and a bi-directional wireless communication network system. Examples of the commercial applications are: Home Automation, Home Security, Building Automation, etc. This is achievable as in a system embodying the invention.

There is no substituting handheld computing device (with MCU or CPU embedded) hooked, linked, or connected to a computing device, that could substitute, supplement, or support a computing device in receiving, retaining, processing and sending information for and on behalf of a computing device, either wired or wirelessly; while the information received, retained, processed, or sent are synchronized timely between the substituting computing device and the computing device described.

It will be understood that in a modification, the lap top 6 may act directly to monitor and control the extension 2 directly by two-way RF signal or via the unit 8 without being linked with the computing device 3 via the Internet.

Also, the electronic device may be any device other than an onloff power socket extension 2 of the embodiment described.
