Abstract

An adjustable and portable lower-back (lumbar) support device comprises a 'rib cage' of flexible battens (a) which conform to the shape of the user's lumbar curve. The battens encase an adjustable core of foam strips (b) which can be added or removed to alter the thickness of the support device. An inflatable tube could be used in place of the foam strips. An outer layer of foam padding provides extra comfort.

Description

<p>ADJUSTABLE AND PORTABLE LUMBAR SUPPORT DEVICE -DESCRIPTION 1/1 An
adjustable and portable lumbar support device comprising a cage of flexible steel (or other material) battens (a) with a core of foam strip (or other material) layers (b).</p>
<p>The degree of support (thickness of the device) can be adjusted by adding or removing the foam layers or by replacing the foam with an inflatable bladder (not shown).</p>
<p>One or more foam layers can consist of two separate pieces of foam which can be moved inwards or outwards from the centre of the support to leave a gap (c) where the user's spinal area presses against the support.</p>
<p>The flexible battens serve to hold the foam layers in place and provide comfortable support by conforming to the curve of the user's lumbar region. A layer of foam padding (d) covering the front of the device improves comfort levels further.</p>
<p>The battens and foam padding (d) are enclosed in a fabric case (Fig. 3) which can be opened at one end to allow adjustment of the foam core strips (Fig. 4).</p>

Claims (1)

  1. <p>CLAIMS</p>
    <p>I An adjustable lower-back (lumbar) support device comprising a rib cage' of flexible battens enclosing an adjustable core of foam (or similar material) strips which can be increased or decreased in number to alter the distance between the front and back sets of battens thus altering the thickness of the support.</p>
    <p>2 An adjustable lower-back support device according to claim 1, in which the adjustable core comprises an inflatable tube which can be inflated or deflated to alter the thickness of the support.</p>
    <p>3 An adjustable lower-back support device according to any of the preceding claims, in which the core is adjustable so that the degree of support can be vaned 4 An adjustable lower-back support device according to claim!, in which the battens are enclosed in a fbric case with a layer of foam padding between the battens and the fabric case on the side of the device which comes into contact with the user's back.</p>
    <p>Amendments to the claims have been fiLed as follows 1. An adjustable lower-back support device comprising a front and rear set of flexible battens enclosing a core, the core being adjustable to alter the distance between the front and rear sets of battens.</p>

An adjustable lower-back support device according to claim 1, in which the adjustable core comprises an inflatable tube which can be inflated or * deflated to alter the thickness of the support 4. An adjustable lower-back support device according to claim 1, in which the battens are enclosed in a fabric case.</p>
    <p>5. An adjustable lower-back support device according to claim 4 in which there is a layer of foam padding between the battens and the fabric case on one side of the device.</p>
    <p>6. An adjustable lower-back support substantially as herein described with reference to and/or as illustrated in the accompanying figures.</p>
