Abstract
A window comprises a solid outer frame 1 fitted into an aperture in an outer wall of a building (not shown), and an inner frame 2 with a perforated screen 3. The inner frame and screen may be moved telescopically from the outer frame towards the outside of the building, to allow air to pass through the perforated screen, whilst preventing any part being used to attach a ligature. The frame may further comprise a cover 4. The frame may be manufactured from steel, uPVC, aluminium or wood. The window may be rectangular, round or oval.

Abstract title Anti-ligature window DESCRIPTION
The need for providing the service user of Mental Health Hospitals and Secure units with self access to fresh air and the provision of a safe environment and duty of care is a cause of great concern within the Health Service.
There is a clear need to protect the service user against taking their own life while enabling them to obtain fresh air as and when they require it.
At present hospitals and secure units are having major concerns balancing the comfort of service users with their need to provide a safe environment for people in their care. The window fittings and indeed the very opening have been the means for allowing vulnerable people the opportunity to take their own life on many occasions.
There is no consensus on how each hospital or unit can monitor or prevent this due to the many different types of windows and openings in service within the various hospitals. In some hospitals staff are required to constantly monitor the service user, other hospitals restrict the user access to fresh air by opening and closing the window both ways can, and do cause areas of conflict between staff and service user.
Some hospitals have made attempts at providing some form of anti-ligature protection by the removal of handles and window ties while keeping in place the biggest potential threat that of the opening itself.
The new unit provides protection to the window ties thus removing the means of attaching anything to the ties which could be used to allow the service user to take their own life. The handles too have designed to allow the service user to easily open the window while at the same time not allowing the ability to attach a cord or other device used for any possible suicide attempt.
The most significant aspect of the anti-ligature design is the guarding of the actual opening itself. This guarding prevents the trapping of items used by vulnerable people in their attempts to take their own lives such as cord, shoe lace article of clothing or linen.
The new invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the complete window in the open position with the Outer Frame 1 which is secured into the outer wall of a building and the Inner Frame 2 pushed outwards in order to allow fresh air into the room through the Perforated Screen 3.
Figure 2 shows the complete window in the closed position with the Outer Frame 1 secured into the outer wall of a building and the Inner Frame 2 in the closed position so as to make a draft free closure.
Figure 3 shows the complete assembly in which the existing wall of the building 5 has inserted the Window Frame 1 with the Glazed Unit 2 in the closed position with Perforated Screen 3 permanently attached to the Glazed Unit 2 and enclosed in the Outer Cover 4

Claims (5)
1. A self contained window preferably rectangular in appearance consisting of a solid outer frame preferably manufactured from mild steel that is fitted into a window aperture in an external outer wall of a building and which contains a mechanical mechanism hidden behind a perforated inner frame which when operated by pushing the inner frame outwards in a telescopic movement from the secure outer frame will allow fresh air to enter the room or building without creating or making usable any external or internal mechanism, lever or handle that could be used to attach a ligature so that a person or persons could either hang themselves or otherwise cause themselves harm or injury and designed in such a way that the appliance is easy to operate and acceptable as a security window without causing distress to people through the appearance of looking intimidating to any person involved.
2. A self contained window as claimed in claim 1 but manufactured from uPvc or other similar material.
3. A self contained window as claimed in claim 1 and 2 but manufactured from aluminium
4. A self contained window as claimed in claim 1, 2 and 3 but manufactured from hard or soft wood.
5. A self contained window as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 and 4 but round, oval or any other shape in appearance.
