Abstract

A check rail manufactured or cut into three pieces to allow easier and more cost effective replacement of the middle section which is the part which requires frequent replacement. The middle section of the three piece check rail is reversible and once worn on both sides can be replaced with off-cut rails. The middle section of the three piece check rail (or the replacement middle section using off-cut rails) has a safety groove (visual aid) of an eighth of an inch deep on both sides which tells you when it needs replaced without the need for measuring.

TITLE-
THREE PIECE RAILWAY CHECK RAIL
BACKGROUND
Check rails guide the wheels of trains to prevent de-railing. Due to the nature of their function the checkrails suffer from wear and tear which results in frequent replacement.
This invention involves the recycling of used rails which would previously have been scrapped. It further facilitates the use of off-cut rails not normally used and reduces the manpower involved.
• Existing check rails are scrapped when they wear away by an eighth of an inch.
• Check rails have to be measured to detect the eighth of an inch wear.
3
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
To overcome this the present invention proposes:-
• The check rail to be divided into three pieces which will enable the centre piece to turn to give a new unworn edge.
• The safety groove (visual aid) is an eight of an inch deep that indicates when the central piece of rail needs to be turned or replaced. When the groove wears away it shows the rail needs replaced and removes the need to measure.
ADVANTAGES
The check rail being in three pieces will enable the central piece to turn to give a new unworn edge. This allows the rail to be used twice and doubles the life of the rail.
The central piece can be replaced with an off-cut of rail which is not normally used.
The two end pieces are rarely worn therefore seldom need to be replaced.
The three smaller pieces are easier to handle, fit and transport. Therefore less manpower is required in all of these aspects.
cMp
The eight of an inchv safety groove removes the need to measure to ascertain when the check rail needs to be replaced.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The three piece check rail can be made by dividing the existing check rail into three pieces and machining the safety groove on both sides of the centre piece.
*
Alternatively the three piece check rail can be manufactured in three pieces with the safety groove incorporated into both sides of the centre piece at the time of manufacture. The three pieces are held together using fishplates with nuts and bolts.
When a three piece check rail is in use and the middle section has been turned when worn down again it can be replaced with off-cuts of rail with the machined safety groove on both sides. This incorporates the use of off-cuts of rail which were previously scrapped.

Claims (1)

  1. A check rail manufactured or cut into three pieces to allow easier and more cost effective replacement of the middle section.
The middle section of the three piece check rail is reversible and once worn on both sides can be replaced with off-cut rails.
The middle section of the three piece check rail has a safety groove (visual de-ef aid) of an eighth of an inchvon both sides which tells you when it needs replaced without the need for measuring.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows
    </
1 A check rail manufactured or cut into three pieces to allow easier and more cost effective replacement of the middle section, the middle section of the three piece check rail being reversible and, once worn on both sides, the middle section can be replaced with off-cut rails, wherein the middle section of the three piece check rail has a safety groove (visual aid) of an eighth of an inch (3.175mm) on both sides, the safety groove indicating when the rail needs to be replaced or turned when the groove wears away.
