Abstract

Power cultivation.-An agricultural machine and tractor with separate motors driving the propelling wheels is provided with means anchored in the ground and connected to and operated by the tractor whereby the motors are so controlled. that the tractor is driven along a predetermined path and automatically traverses the whole of a field. In the form shown the tractor has two propelling wheels 2 each driven by an electric motor 4 and a castor wheel (not shown). The motors 4 are controlled through a rheostat 10 having an arm 9 connected to an electric cable 16 the other end of which is fixed to a post 15. The arm 9 is normally held by a spring 11 in a central position in which the motors are driven equally and is also connected to a sliding rod 12 carrying a buffer 14. A spring reel 21 on the cable 16 takes up the slack. When the motors are started the tractor at first tends to travel in a straight line, but the pull of the cable 16 moves the arm 9 and causes one motor to be driven faster than the other so that the tractor moves in a curved or spiral path. At fences 25, Fig. 6, or other barriers the buffer 14 is pushed in and the outer motor receives a still greater proportion of the power so that the tractor deviates from the spiral path to clear the fence. At corners a wire or other barrier 28 may be erected to act on the buffer 14. Other motors than electric may be employed, the control, however, being the same.
