Abstract

A publication format in the form of a calendar 10 wherein each sheet 12 has an outstanding carrier portion 16 in the form of a shelf or ledge. The portion 16 carries raised portions 24 extending upwardly from the carrier portion 16, and spaced outwardly from the main sheet 12.

Description

PUBLICATION FORMAT

This invention relates to publication formats More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to publication formats in the form of calendars The design of calendars is well known and usually comprises twelve double pages, where each double page represents a month Generally, the calendar is hung on a wall with one page at the top having a picture on it and another page at the bottom having the days of the month According to one aspect of this invention, there is provided a publication format comprising a sheet having a main portion, a carrier portion foldable to extend transverse to the main portion, and a raised portion extending generally transverse from the carrier portion The publication format may be a calendar The raised portion may extend generally parallel to the sheet The raised portion may comprise an image or a picture, or a portion of an image or a picture In a first embodiment, the carrier portion may be formed as a fold region of the sheet The main portion of the sheet may have an upper region, and a lower regions The fold region may be provided between the upper and lower region The raised portion may extend from the carrier portion to the upper region In the first embodiment the carrier portion may be formed by folding the main portion at the fold region The fold region may comprise first, second and third substantially parallel fold lines, and the sheet may be foldable about said fold lines to provide the aforesaid carrier portion The carrier may be in the form of a ledge or a shelf extending from the sheet In a first embodiment the carrier portion may include a subsidiary fold line about which the raised region can fold on the carrier portion Connecting members may be provided to connect the raised region to the main portion of the sheet In a second embodiment, the publication format may have first and second sheets providing a display region The first sheet may provide an upper region of the display region The second sheet may provide the carrier portion and a lower region of the display region In the second embodiment, the raised portion may extend from the carrier portion to the upper region The carrier portion may carry a display sheet having a main region and the raised portion The display sheet may comprise a subsidiary fold line about which the display sheet can fold to provide the raised portion Connecting members may be provided to connect the raised portion to the main region In the first embodiment, the raised portion may be formed by cutting the sheet to define cut regions extending from the, or each, connecting member to the carrier portion In the second embodiment, the raised portion may be formed by cutting the display sheet to define cut regions extending from the, or each, connecting member to the carrier portion The publication format may comprise a plurality of the aforesaid sheets secured to one another, for example by an adhesive.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of a publication format, and Fig 2 shows a sectional side view of a second embodiment of a publication format Referring to Fig 1, there is shown a first embodiment of a publication format in the form of a calendar 10 which comprises a plurality of sheets 12, each sheet comprising a main portion 14 providing an upper region 14A and a lower region 14B The sheet 12 also includes a fold region 16 about which the sheet 12 can be folded between an open condition, as shown in the IS drawing, and a closed condition in which the upper region 14A overlies the lower region 14B.

The fold region 16 is provided by a first fold line 18, a second fold line 20, and a third fold line 22 extending between the first and second fold lines 18, 20 The upper region 14A of the sheet 12 extends upwardly from the first fold line 18 and the lower region 14B extends downwardly from the second fold line 20 The sheet 12 is folded about the first, second and third fold lines to provide the fold region 16 as an outwardly extending carrier portion iii the form of a shelf or ledge A raised display portion 24 extends upwardly from the carrier portion 16 and is formed by cutting the raised portion 24 from the upper region 14A of the main portion 14 of the sheet 12 The display portion 24 is attached to the carrier portion 16 by subsidiary fold lines 26. The display portion 24 can be folded relative to the carrier portion 16. The display portion 24 may have a picture or an image thereon, or a portion of a picture or an image Where the display portion 24 has only a portion of the picture or image, the remainder of the picture or image is provided on the upper region 14A of the main portion 14 of the sheet 12 This provides a three dimensional effect to the picture or image A connecting tab 28 extends from the display portion 24 to the upper region 1 4A of the main portion of the sheet 12 In the embodiment shown, the display portion 24 may comprise first and second display portions 24A, 24B, the first display portion 24A being attached to the carrier portion 16 by fold lines 26A, and the second display portion 24B being attached to the carrier portion 16 by subsidiary fold lines 26B A subsidiary connecting tab 30 connects the subsidiary display portion 24B to the main display portion 24A The carrier portion 16 and the connecting tabs 28, 30 provide the effect of raising the first and second display portions 24A, 24B to the raised position shown in Fig 1, when the sheet 12 is moved from its closed condition to its open condition In the lower region 14B of the sheet 14 there is provided a text area 32 in which the details of a particular month can be provided As can be seen, the calendar 10 comprises a plurality of the sheets 12 arranged one after the other and secured to each other by an adhesive at a spine 34 Referring to Fig 2, there is shown a second embodiment of a publication format in the form of a calendar 110 which comprises a plurality of sheets, only four of which, 112A, 112B, 112C, 112D are shown It will be appreciated by the skilled person that the calendar will include a sufficient number of sheets 112 for all the months of the year. Only four sheets are shown in Fig 2 for clarity The sheets 112A to 112D comprise respective main portions 114A, 114B, 1140, 114D and, apart from the first sheet 112A, each sheet 112B, 1120, 112D comprises a respective carrier portion 116B, 1160, 116D A respective display sheet 11 8B, 11 8C, 11 8D extends from the carrier portions 116B, 1160, 116D to the main portion 114 of the preceeding sheet For example, the display sheet 1 18B on the carrier portion 1 16B extends from the carrier portion 116B to the main portion 114A of the first sheet 1 12A Each display sheet 118B to 0 comprises a main region 122 and a raised portion 124 extending upwardly and/or outwardly from the main region 122 The raised portion 124 has a picture or an image provided thereon, or a portion of a picture or image Where the raised portion 124 has only a portion of the picture or image, the remainder is provided on the main region 122 This provides a three dimensional effect to the picture or image.

A major proportion 130 of the main region 122 of each of the display sheets 118B, C, 0 is adhered to the main portion 114A, 114B, 114C of the respective preceding sheet 112A, 112B, 1120 Apart from the first sheet 112A, each of the sheets 112B, 1120, 112D comprises a main fold line 126 about which the respective carrier portion 116B, 1160, 116D can fold relative to the respective main portion 114 Each display sheet 118B, 118C, 118D comprises a subsidiary fold line 128 about which the raised region 124 can fold relative to the main region 122 of the display sheet 118 A connecting tab 120 extends from the raised region 124 to the major portion 130 of the main region 122 of each display sheet B to

D

In use, the sheets 1 12A to D are folded to provide separate viewable regions for each month As each month passes, the next sheet 112B, 1120, 112D is folded upwardly and the raised region 124 is displayed In the embodiment shown in Fig 3, only 4 sheets 112A, 112B, 1120, 112D are shown. It will be appreciated that the number of the sheets provided will be sufficient to provide a single display of each month Only four sheets are shown in Fig 2 for clarity Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention For example, the display portion 24 could be any desired display portion Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or IS shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon
