Abstract

A protecting device 1 for protecting the pivot point 2 of a bidirectional swing door. The device can be used to protect the pivot point from damage or repair a damaged pivot point. The protecting device is secured in place using bolt through fixings through side holes 3 which prevent splitting of the door. The device can be used on the top or bottom pivot points of the door.

Description

I

Description

Title: A unit to repair or protect the pivot point of a pivoting door Background: This invention relates to a unit to repair/protect pivoting doors.

Pivoting doors (doors that swing open in either direction) are commonly used in public and commercial buildings. The pivoting action is facilitated either manually by means of top and bottom pivot hinges or by means of an automatic pivoting door closer mechanism mounted on the transom or floor.

The area around the top and bottom pivot points is particularly vulnerable to damage, even during normal usage. This type of door often splits at the pivot point, potentially causing personal injury and requiring costly repair by necessitating replacement of the entire door.

Statement of invention: To overcome this, this invention has been designed to repair damaged pivoting doors and/or protect undamaged pivoting doors from potential damage at the pivot point.

Essential features: This invention provides a unit that is fitted to completely encase the pivot point thereby repairing existing damage and/or preventing potential damage.

This invention provides a universal unit that is simply installed and secured into place over either the top, the bottom or both top and bottom pivot points on the pivoting door.

This invention provides a unit that when fitted does not compromise the function of either pivot hinges or any type of transom or floor mounted pivoting automatic door closer mechanism where used.

This invention provides a unit capable of being manufactured to accommodate any pivoting door dimensions, whether commercially available or custom-built door.

Advantages: The unit can be used to repair pivoting doors with existing damage, avoiding the need to replace the entire door.

The unit can be fitted to existing but undamaged pivoting doors, thereby protecting against potential future damage without the need to replace the entire door.

Advantages (cont'd): The unit can be incorporated into the manufacture of pivoting doors thereby protecting against potential future damage and prolonging the life of the door.

The unit can be made to order with variable dimensions thereby accommodating the dimensions of any pivoting door whether commercially available or custom-built.

Preferably the unit is manufactured from stainless steel in a finish that matches or complements existing door furniture.

Drawings: An example of the unit will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 represents a section of a pivoting door with the invention fitted in place Figures 2, 3 and 4 show the features of the invention Figure 1 represents the unit (I) fitted to the top section of a pivoting door. The pivoting action of the door is facilitated either by means of top and bottom pivot hinges in the frame allowing the door to be manually opened in either direction, or by installation of an automatic pivoting door closer mechanisms mounted on the transom or floor. These pivot fittings are morticed into the timber of the door, therefore the area around the pivot points are particularly vulnerable to damage by splitting.

The unit (1) is universal and may be fitted either over the top (2), the bottom, or both top and bottom pivot points. The unit is secured in place with bolt-through fixings through side holes (3) thereby encasing and strengthening the pivot point to prevent splitting of the door. The positioning of the unit does not compromise the function of either pivoting hinges or any automatic pivoting door closer mechanism where fitted.

Figure 2 shows a top view of the unit. The slot (4) allows for any necessary adjustment of the door position during routine maintenance. The degree of curve on the back edge (5) of the unit can be varied during manufacture to allow correct fitting over the radiused edge of the door. A hole (6) allows access to adjust the pivot fittings if necessary during routine maintenance of the door.

Drawings (cont'd): Figure 3 is a side view of the unit showing the holes (3) that allow the unit to be secured to the door using bolt-through fixings. The hole (7) in the end of the unit allows access to adjust the pivot fittings if necessary during routine maintenance of the door.

Figure 4 is an end-on view of the unit showing the hole (7) that allows access to adjust the pivot fittings if necessary during routine maintenance of the door.

The dimensions of the unit can be varied during manufacture to accommodate fitting to doors of differing size and thickness.

Claims (1)
