Abstract

A barrier 3 for helping to prevent the transfer of infection such as MRSA from person to person when medical apparatus such as a blood pressure measuring instrument 2 is applied to a person's body. The barrier may comprise paper or the like material which in use is able to conform to both the body of the person and the body engaging region of the apparatus.

Description

A BARRiER FOR USE WITH MEDICAL APPARATUS The present invention relates
to a barrier for use with medical apparatus such as blood pressure measuring instruments.

It is common practice to use blood pressure instruments on a number of successive patients without attempting to clean or sterilise the body contacting regions of the instrument between patients. A reason for this is that the body engaging regions are usually made from materials that do not readily lend themseif to frequent cleaning and additionally there has been no history of the systematic cleaning of such instruments between patients.

The conventional practices in medical hygiene have had to undergo radical re-thinking in the current climate of the emergence of "super bugs" such as MRSA or other bacteria or viruses.

To this end there is provided according to one aspect of the present invention a barrier for helping to prevent the transfer of infection from person to person when medical apparatus is applied to a person's body, wherein the barrier comprises material which in use is able to conform to both the body of the person and the body engaging region of the apparatus.

According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a pack of barriers as defined above, each barrier being of such configuration and size as to be suitable for use with a particular apparatus.

According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of using a barrier as defined above, comprising so applying medical apparatus to a person's body that the barrier is interposed between the body and the apparatus and engages both the body and the apparatus.

The barrier may comprise paper or the like material which can be disposed after a single use.

The barrier may be adapted to be used with blood pressure apparatus.

An embodiment of the present invention will flow be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of a blood pressure instrument attached to a person's wrist with a barrier interposed between the wrist and the instrument, and Figure 2 shows a blood pressure instrument attached to a person's upper arm, Referring to Figure i there is shown a patient generally indicated by reference numeral 1. On his wrist is a conventional blood pressure measuring instrument 2. Interposed between the patient's wrist and the blood pressure measuring instrument 2 is a paper barrier 3 which, as shown, extends beyond the extremity of the cuff. Whilst the barrier does not have to be of specific dimensions it should overlap the cuff of the instrument so that no part of the arm engaging region of the instrument contacts the skin.

In use, the paper barrier 3 is held in place by the tightness of the cuff of the instrument 2 which may for example be provided with strips of velcro (not shown) for securing it in place.

Referring to Figure 2, there is also shown a patient generally indicated by reference numeral 1. On his upper arm is a blood pressure measuring instrument 4. Interposed between the patient's arm and the blood pressure measuring instrument is a paper barrier 5 which, as in the case of the barrier 3 shown in Figure 1, extends beyond the extremity of the cuff of the instrument 4.

Whilst the barrier does not have to be of specific dimensions or configuration it should in all its applications overlap the body engaging region of the apparatus or instrument. :0

Claims (1)

  1.
Claims 1. A barrier for helping to prevent the transfer of infection
from person to person when medical apparatus is applied to a person's body, wherein the barrier comprises material which in use is able to conform to both the body of the person and the body engaging region of the apparatus.

2. A pack of barriers comprising a plurality of barriers as claimed in claim 1, each barrier being of such configuration and size as to be suitable for use with a particular apparatus.

3. A barrier as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, comprising paper or the like material which can be disposed after a single use.

4. A barrier as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, adapted to be used with blood pressure apparatus.

5. A method of using a barrier as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, comprising so applying medical apparatus to a person's body that the barrier is interposed between the body and the apparatus and engages both the body and the apparatus.

6. A barrier substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figurel or Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
