Abstract

A domestic digital electricity consumption monitor which is wired into the domestic electricity supply and fixed to a wall inside the property. All household electrical appliances are provided with power through the monitor which accurately monitors and display in digital format household electricity consumption in watts/kilowatts. The monitoring device can provide various time related statistical consumption reports and acts as a visual prompt to encourage the householder to turn off unused electrical appliances. It is anticipated the monitor will be approx. 20cm x 20cm and made of plastic, glass, metal or a combination of these materials.

Description

Description

Domestic Electricity Wattage Monitor There is general national and international concern over ever increasing electricity consumption and higher energy prices. This is equally relevant to both the industrial and domestic markets. To date however, most focus by Government has been on large industrial users and our obligations under the Kyoto Agreement etc. Not much attention has been given to encouraging domestic electricity users to reduce their consumption and yet undoubtedly this could have a significant impact in reducing overall electricity consumption.

This invention provides domestic electricity users with a constant visual guide as to how much electricity they are consuming at any given time measured in kilowatts.

By displaying this information in a digital format, similar to a digital clock display, consumers can be prompted to switch off non-essential electrical appliances, TVs, computers etc as this will reduce consumption which will be reflected in the display monitor. The consumer will be aware that a lower reading means less consumption and lower bills.

The electricity monitor is connected to the domestic electricity ring mains in the house and accurately displays total electricity consumption on an ongoing basis. It can also provide statistical information about average consumption over various timeframes such as days, weeks, months etc. The monitor is similar in size to a standard domestic electric meter but with a digital display and on/off button. It is to be sited in a prominent place such as a hallway so that it can be seen by all members of the family.
