Abstract

A laptop computer has a display that may be manually re-orientated to enable the user to view the display in normal landscape, normal portrait, reversed landscape or revered portrait mode. The display can also be elevated to a more ergonomic position. In the portrait orientation the user is able to view the display in a similar aspect to an A4 sheet thus optimising the font size for typical word processing applications and reducing the need for scrolling. The mechanism includes a landscape/portrait mode switch that changes state when the display rotates between landscape and portrait orientations. The switch signals the laptop operating system of the current orientation mode thereby allowing applications to automatically adjust the display for optimum settings.

Description

I

LAPTOP DISPLAY PORTRAIT REORIENTATION OPTION

The invention relates to a Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system which includes an integrated mechanism as indicated in LRD 05. Parts 3, 5, 6, 7 & 8 can be manually manipulated to re-orientate the laptop display 2, 4 to allow the user to view the display in normal landscape SK1O, normal portrait SK2O, reverse landscape SKi 5 and reverse portrait from a normal stowage arrangement as shown SKO5.

The disc Display Portrait Reorientation Option system can bc opened from the normal stowage arrangement and used like a traditional display monitor. From the opened position a tolerance clip arrangement would allow the laptop display 2, 4 to be dc-hinged from hingeplate2, 6. From the de-hinged position the laptop display 2, 4 can be raised within the constraints of the slideplatel, 3 until another tolerance clip position is reached for normal landscape as shown SKI 0.

The hingeplate2, 6 would be able to be adjusted through at least 180 deg via standard tolerance hinge fit to the shoulder supports thus allowing the user to select the laptop display angle that is most comfortable. The laptop may be used in this position should the user opt for a landscape orientation. Alternatively, the user may now rotate the laptop display through 90 deg about displaypin, 5 until a tolerance clip point is reached to signify that the portrait position had been reached. The mechanism will include a landscape / portrait mode switch that changes state when the display rotates between Landscape and Portrait. The switch will signal the laptop operating system of the current orientation mode allowing applications to automatically adjust the display for optimum settings.

It would be possible to facilitate rotation in either or both clockwise or anti-clockwise directions.

An object of this invention is to provide a laptop display with the benefit of also elevating the display to a more ergonomic position. In the portrait position the user will also be able to view the display in a similar aspect to an A4 sheet thus optimising the font size for typical word processing applications. In this way eye strain will be reduced since less scrolling will be required for a given font size when compared to landscape mode.

Without loss to style and size of the laptop the user would benefit from the enhanced flexibility of viewing position that would be available.

Claims (1)

 1.
CLAIMS

I. A Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system includes an integrated mechanism that can be used to manually re- orientate a laptop display to allow the user to view the display in normal landscape, normal portrait, reverse landscape and reverse portrait.

2. A Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system as claimed in Claim 1, would be based on the arrangement of slide and lock / rotate and lock mechanisms which would be integrated into the display I lid.

3. A Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system in any preceding claim, in the portrait position the user will be able to view the display in portrait thus optimising the font size for typical word processing applications, thus eye strain will be reduced since less page scrolling will be required for a given font size when compared to landscape mode for an equivalent sized display.

4. A Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system in any preceding claim, will have an integrated landscape / portrait mode switch built into the mechanism that changes state when the display rotates between Landscape and Portrait to signal the laptop operating system of the current orientation mode thus enabling pc software applications to automatically adjust for the optimum display settings.

5. A Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system in any preceding claim, will result in an elevated display position when compared to a conventional monitor.

6. A Laptop Display Portrait Reorientation Option system in any preceding claim, will integrate into almost any standard Laptop Personal Computer Base.
