Abstract
A carrier 30 for a laminating pouch 10 has a projection 34 from one end, the projection being more rigid than the rest of the carrier. The carrier may comprise sheets of fibre reinforced material or flexible plastics material or a combination thereof which may be coated with PTFE. The carrier is thin enough to permit heat transmission from a laminating machine to the laminating pouch within the carrier and at the same time is durable enough to withstand repeated use. The rigid projection permits the carrier to be caught by the rollers 40,41 in a laminating machine without fouling the mechanism.
Description

CARRIER FOR LAMINATING POUCH

iNTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND ART

The present invention relates to an improved carrier for a laminating pouch.

Laminating pouches are themselves well known: they comprise two sheets of plastics material between which is placed material such as paper which is desired to be laminated. Once the paper has been inserted into the pouch, the pouch is then put through a laminating machine where rollers will press the two sheets together in the presence of heat. The insides of the laminating pouch are coated with a glue which melts in the heat to seal the edges and the contents of the pouch together. Sometimes however the glue will seep from the edges of the pouch on to the rollers. This can lead to jamming of the machines. which then require more frequent servicing than usual. This is wasteful both in terms of time and money.

In an attempt to solve this problem a box of laminating pouches will frequently include a carrier: a folded oversized sheet of paper or card into which the pouch is placed before being put through the laminating machine. This means that any glue which escapes the pouch covers only the inside of the carrier and not the roller. Such carriers may be made in a variety of thicknesses, but there are problems with all known carriers: if they are made of thick durable card, they will prevent sufficient heat transmission to the laminating pouch inside the carrier to properly melt the glue; ii they are instead made of thinner paper, they will permit heat transmission but will not be durable enough to withstand repeated use and if too thin and flexible will simply he caught and twisted round the rollers or even torn. In either case, carriers are rarely used as they cause as many problems as they are meant to solve.

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to solve such problems and create a carrier which will be usable and can withstand repeated use.

STATEMENT OF INVENTION

In accordance with the present invention there is provided a carrier (as defined above) adapted to receive and envelop a laminating pouch, wherein said carrier has a projection from one end, said projection being more rigid than the rest of the carrier.

Preferably the carrier comprises a fibre-reinforced material.

The carrier may also comprise a flexible plastics material.

Preferably the material is PTFE-coated.

(The generic name PTFE is used throughout to avoid use of a registered trade mark, but for the avoidance of doubt the actual material used is Teflon .) Preferably the carrier comprises two sheets which co-operate to envelop a laminating pouch.

Preferably the two sheets are of different thickness.

Preferably one sheet has a thickness of 0.075mm and the other sheet has a thickness of 0.125mm.

Preferably the rigid projection extends 50mm from the end of the carrier.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the drawings, in which: FIG I is a front perspective view of a carrier in accordance with the present invention in use with a simplified view ola laminating machine; and FIG 2 is a side view of a conventional carrier in use with a simplified view of a laminating machine.

A laminating pouch 10 holds a sheet of paper 20 and is itself held within a carrier 30 in accordance with the present invention. Such a carrier 30 comprises a top sheet 31 and a bottom supporting sheet 32 sealed at an end 33. Projecting from this end 33 is a rigid leading edge 34. The bottom supporting sheet 32 has a thickness of 0.125mm and the top sheet 31 has a thickness of 0.075mm; the lighter top sheet 31 therefore lifts away from the bottom sheet 32 with ease. The low thickness enables heat to be transmitted through the carrier 30 to the laminating pouch 10. Both the top sheet 31 and the bottom supporting sheet 32 are composed of a PTFE-coated woven fabric material which makes them heat resistant and durable.

A laminating machine (not shown) includes two sets of rollers 40 & 41. Rollers 40A & 40B are heated under the control of a thermostat (not shown) which can regulate the temperature of the lamination process. A pair of guide rails 42 is located in the space 43 between the two sets of rollers 40 & 41. The heating element (not shown) can be incorporated into the guide rails 42 as well as or instead of the rollers 40.

As the carrier 30 in accordance with the present invention comes into contact with rollers 40A & 40B, it is moved toward rollers 41A & 41B, which are ideally turning slightly faster than rollers 40A & 40B; this helps to pull the carrier 30 fiat and prevent its creasing.

If a conventional carrier 300 is made of a thick card, heat will not be transmitted to the laminating pouch therein (not shown). If a conventional carrier 300 is too thin and therefore flexible, once it comes into contact with rollers 40A & 40B it may wrap around them or otherwise be directed around the guide rails 42 or it may tear when it makes contact with faster-moving rollers 41A & 41B. This is particularly likely if the thin carrier 300 has become curled or worn as a result of frequent use.

The rigid leading edge 34 of a carrier 30 in accordance with the present invention is of a length equal to or greater than the space 43 between the two sets of rollers 40 & 41 (50mm has been found to be optimal but it depends on the laminating machine).

Once the rigid leading edge 34 has passed through the first set of rollers 40 and been caught by the second set of rollers 41, the flexible carrier 30 in accordance with the present invention will he driven through without fouling the mechanism in the fashion of a conventional carrier 300.
