Abstract

A specimen container and lid combination (figure 1) in which a hermetic seal is produced and maintained by a hard radial bead 6 (figure 3) on the inside of the container rim 3 contacting a taper 5 on the inside of lid 8 which is made of a softer material. This cap 8 is vertically dispaced onto jar 4 on tightening and this action creates an ever increasing pressure as bead 6 moves up taper 5. The pressure thus created between these two radial surfaces forms the required seal.

Sper-inrn Ctiii-1i The invention relates to a container and lid used for
long-tern leak-free storage of liquid solutions including fornEldehyde.
Snch container and lid conbinations are bell known, but nny have proved unsetisfactory for long term storage of aggressive or volatile fluids.
A problen with saie containers and lids used for this purpose is that the lid must be canpletely scred kine before a reliable sl occurs. In practice varying anout of tightening toque is applied by different people when closing containers, and quality of seal is often not attained because lids are not sufficiently tightened.
Ihe object of this invention is to provide a prodnct with a seal betien the container and lid which occurs ll before the lid is fully acreed bane. This invention is of a seal created prinnrily by a radial bead forinetion on the inside of the container rim. This fornetion contacts with a taper on the inside of the lid. while tapered frustrun fonintions are camon in nany containers this invention relates to the arrang int of a container sealing bead being forced onto a taper by tightening of the lid, to prodnce a sealing effect as soon as they ireke contact.
The quality of the seal increases as the lid is scred hane.
Radial sealing beads in the lid have bean used previously. This invention particularly relates to having a radial bead on the inside of the container rim, the object being for the rigid bead to t into the nore flexible naterial of which the taper on the lid is nEde.
A preferred anbodlient of the invention will now be dasribed with reference to the accanpenying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the top and side view of an assanbied container and lid.
Figure 2 shows the side view with the lid in its tightened position.
Figure 3 shows the critical sealing area, with the threads aKitted for the sake of clarity.
As shown in figure 1 the lid 8 has a pattern on the outer upper edge 1. Also shown is the outerside of the sealing taper on the frustrun 2 which acts on the sealing bead 6 (of figure 3).
Figure 3 shows a section of lid 8 in place on container 4 but not fully tightened. Sealing bead 6 on the inside of container rim 3 is just neldng contact on taper 5, where, on further 2.
tightening of the lid, the bead 6 will nxwe up taper 5 towards sealing area 7. The vertical nr)veIent of sealing bead 6 up lid taper 5 creates ever:[rxreasing pressure betwaen the surfaces, thus prodixing a seal even before attaining the rest position in sealing area 7. Being of a rigid naterial, sealing bead 6 resists defornution during this tightening. Taper 5 is uncle of a softer unterini and deforms slightly as sealing bead 6 naves vertically up the taper.
This ccxnbination of a hard and soft nnterial ensures that sealing takes place evenly and that the bead 6 can seat into the taper 7 ensuring a heinetic seal.
Lids 8 are prockxed fran a soft plastic and containers 4 fran harder plastic. Bacause lids are reaoved and replaced nore than ore during the life of the article, this canbination of neterlals allo tie position of the final seal area to change each tine the lid is raiDved and replaced.
Any slight relaxing or denting of the lid 8 unterial in tie sealing area 7 of the lid 8 d.e to long tenn contact pressure fran bead 6 is canpenseted for the next tine the lid is sre.d tight by the bead 6 nDving further up the taper 5 to a new, unccfflpressed sealing area 7. 3.
