Abstract

A ferrule has curved front and rear edges (5 and 12 Fig 1a). The ferrule has a ridged ground engaging surface (6) with a plurality of shaped ridges thereon, the ridges may have a variety of profiles, see Figures 4a - 4c inclusive. The ridges run parallel to the sides (8) of the ferrule. The ferrule may have a flat portion to the base between the curved end portions. The ferrule may have a hollow central section (7) wherein a walking stick or crutch may be located. The ferrule may be made from a plastic or rubber material.

Description

1 2431099
GLIDING FERRULE
The invention relates to a ferrule of the type that fits onto the bottom of a walking aid such as a walking frame, crutch or walking stick.
When a walking aid is in use the hard edges of many ferrules catch dangerously on slightly raised surfaces so that it must be lifted over the obstacle, for example the edge of a mat. Many flat bottom ferrules also comprise an under surface that allows unwanted sideways movement of the walking aid, causing it to slip and slide.
To overcome this, the invention provides a ferrule with a curved front or front and back ends and ridged under surface. The ridges underneath run in the direction of motion toward the front and back ends. The ferrule attaches tightly onto the legs of the walking aid by a hollow opening on the top.
The object of this invention is to allow a smooth transition onto and olT a slightly raised surface so that the walking aid does not need to be lifted, and at the same time allowing the walking aid to move in a straight trajectory over any surface while reducing sideways movement.
The invention can be made from plastic or rubber depending on the surface it will be most generally used on. The ferrule size may vary to fit different sizes and types of walking aid.
The following is a description of the invention with reference to the accompanying figures: FIG la. shows the side view of a ferrule with curved front (5) and back (12) ends as it FIG lb. shows the side view of a ferrule with a curved front only (5) as it would sit while in use.
FIG 2. shows the top view of a ferrule with curved front and back ends.
FIG 3. shows the bottom view of a ferrule with curved front and back ends.
FIG 4a. shows the front view of a ferrule with a peaked ridge.
FIG 4b. shows the front view of a ferrule with a curved ridge.
FIG 4c. shows the front view of a ferrule with a flat ridge.
It can be seen from FIG I a that both ends (5 and 12) of the ferrule have curved surfaces with the beginning of curvature on the underside of the ferrule. When the walking aid is used in a forward aid backward motion (9) , any low obstacle will come into contact with the surface of curvature first. This will have the effect of reducing friction and stoppage.
It can be seen from FIG lb that only the front end (5) is curved. When the walking aid is used in a forward motion (13), any low obstacle will come into contact with the surface of curvature first. This will have the effect of reducing friction and stoppage.
It can be seen from FIG Ia that the walking aid may be inserted at an angle (11) into the top of the ferrule (7). This will have the effect of ensuring the bottom surface is parallel to the underlying surface once the ferrule has been fitted to the walking aid.
FIG 3 shows that the underside of the lerrule consists of a series of ridges (6), that run at a right angle to the front and back ends and parallel to either side of the ferrule (8).
l'his will have the effect of reducing the sideways movement (10) of the ferrule and walking aid when the ridges are in contact with an underlying surface. j

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A ferrule that has a curved end at the front (Fig I b) or front
and back (Fig I a) and a ridged under surface (6), with the ridges running from the front to back ends and parallel to either side (8) of the ferrule.
  2. 2. A ferrule as claimed in 1, where the flat under surface of the ferrule sits flat upon the underlying surface.
  3. 3. A ferrule as claimed in 2, that attaches to the bottom of the legs of a walking aid (7), by a hollow opening on the top.
  4. 4. A ferrule as claimed in 3, which can be manufactured from plastic or rubber or a combination of these materials.
