APPARATUS FOR CONTAINING A
PLURALITY OF BOTTLES
This invention relates to apparatus for containing a plurality of bottles.
Bottles for beverages are often such that the bottles have a body part, a neck part, an opening in a free end of the neck part, and a cap. The cap has a disc part for extending across the opening, and a skirt part for being clamped around the free end of the neck part. The bottles are opened by a bottle opener which is used to lever the cap off the neck part of the bottle. The bottles are often sold in packs. When it is desired to remove a bottle from the pack and open the bottle, it often occurs that a bottle opener is not available. The bottle opener may have been forgotten, lost, or it may be in use by someone else.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for containing a plurality of bottles: the bottles each having a body part, a neck part, an opening in a free end of the neck part, and a cap, the cap having a disc part for extending across the opening, and a skirt part for being clamped around the free end of the neck part; and the apparatus comprising a container portion for containing the bottles, and at least one opener for enabling the bottles to be opened by having their caps forced off their neck parts.
With the apparatus of the present invention, the bottle opener is always where the container portion is, and thus there is no problem of a bottle opener not being available in the vicinity of the container portion containing the bottles.
In a first embodiment of the invention, the apparatus may be one in which the container portion comprises a centre column, an upper flange which extends outwardly from a top part of the centre column, and a bottom flange which extends outwardly from a bottom part of the centre column, a plurality of retaining apertures in the upper flange with there being one of the retaining apertures for each bottle to be held in the container portion, and in which there is one of the openers positioned at each retaining aperture such that the bottles are able to be opened as they are removed from their retaining apertures.
In the first embodiment of the invention, the apparatus may be one in which the bottom flange has a plurality of retaining formations with there being one of the retaining formations for each bottle to be held in the container portion, and each retaining formation being such that it is for receiving a bottom of one of the bottles. The retaining formations may be depressions in an upper surface of the bottom flange. The upper surface is that surface of the container portion that faces the lower surface of the upper flange. Other retaining formations and depressions may be employed.
The centre column may be adjustable in height to accommodate bottles of different heights. The centre column may be adjustable in height by being telescopic or by being provided with any other suitable and appropriate height adjusting means. Alternatively, the centre column may be rigid and therefore of a fixed height.
Preferably, the centre column is hollow and is adapted to receive the used caps from the opened bottles. In this case, the centre column may include a lid for closing the hollow centre column. The lid may be a press fit, screw fit, bayonet fit or any other type of fit to the hollow centre column.
In a second embodiment of the invention, the apparatus may be one in which the container portion comprises a ring member having a plurality of retaining apertures, each retaining aperture being constructed for holding one of the bottles by the neck part, there being one of the openers positioned at each retaining aperture such that the bottles are able to be opened as they are removed from their retaining apertures, and the ring member being such that the bottles hang from the ring member during use of the apparatus.
The ring member is preferably a flat disc-like ring member.
In a third embodiment of the invention, the apparatus is one in which the container portion is a carton, and in which there is only one of the openers, the opener being in a wall part of the carton.
The carton may have a chamber for receiving the caps as they fall off the neck part during opening of the bottle with the container.
The carton may have a perforated end for enabling the carton to be opened in order to dispense the bottles from the carton. Other designs for enabling the bottles easily to be dispensed from the carton may be employed.
In a fourth embodiment of the invention, the apparatus is one in which the container portion is a carton, and in which the carton has an upper part having a plurality of retaining apertures with there being one of the retaining apertures for each bottle to be held in the carton, and in which there is one of the openers positioned at each retaining aperture such that the bottles are able to be opened as they are removed from their retaining apertures.
In the fourth embodiment of the invention, the apparatus may be one in which there is a single row of the retaining apertures, and in which one side of the carton is open and the other side of the carton is closed. The closed side of the carton may bear printing or other material as may be desired.
Alternatively, the apparatus may be one in which there are two rows the retaining apertures, and in which two opposite sides of the carton are open for allowing removal of the bottles.
In all embodiments of the invention, the apparatus may include a handle. Any suitable and appropriate type of handle formation may be employed. Thus, for example, the handle may be a strap, or alternatively the handle may be in the form of a lip forming part of the container portion of the apparatus.
The container portion may be made from any suitable and appropriate materials including plastics materials, cardboard and metals.
The container portion will generally be constructed to be strong enough to allow the caps to be levered off their bottles without the levering action causing the body portion unduly to deform or to collapse.
The apparatus of the present invention will usually be sold full of bottles. However, if desired, the apparatus of the present invention may be constructed to be reusable for refilling with further bottles. In this case, the apparatus of the invention may be sold empty for subsequent filling by a purchaser.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompany drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of first apparatus for containing a plurality of bottles; Figure 2 is an exploded view of part of the first apparatus shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of second apparatus for containing a plurality of bottles; Figure 4 is a top view of the second apparatus shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 is a perspective view of part of third apparatus for opening a plurality of bottles; Figure 6 shows how the third apparatus shown in Figure 5 is used; Figure 7 shows in more detail an opener part of the apparatus shown in Figure 5; Figure 8 shows an end of the apparatus shown in Figure 5, the end being opposite with the end containing the opening; Figure 9 is a perspective view of fourth apparatus for containing a plurality of bottles; Figure 10 shows in more detail an opener part of the fourth apparatus shown in Figure 9; Figure 11 shows how the opener fits around a cap of a bottle in the fourth apparatus shown in Figure 9; and Figure 12 is a perspective view of fifth apparatus for containing a plurality of bottles.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown apparatus 2 for containing a plurality of bottles 4. The bottles 4 each have a body part 6, a neck part 8, an opening 10 in a free end 12 of the neck part 8, and a cap 14.
The cap 14 has a disc part 16 for extending across the opening 10. The cap 14 also has a skirt part 18 for being clamped around the free end 12 of the neck part 8. The clamping may be effected by crimping the skirt part 18 into the desired position.
The apparatus 2 comprises a container portion 20 for containing the bottles 4. The apparatus 2 also comprises at least one opener 22 for enabling the bottles 4 to be opened by having their caps forced off their neck part 8.
The container portion 20 comprises a centre column 24, an upper flange 26 which extends outwardly from a top part of the centre column 24, and a bottom flange 28 which extends outwardly from a bottom part of the centre column 24.
The upper flange 26 is such that it has a plurality of retaining apertures 30. There is one of the retaining apertures 30 for each bottle 4 to be held in the container portion 20. There is one of the openers 20 positioned at each retaining aperture 30 such that the bottles 4 are able to be opened as they are removed from their retaining apertures 30.
The bottom flange 28 is provided with a plurality of retaining formations 32. There is one of the retaining formations 32 for each bottle 4 to be held in the container portion 20. Each retaining formation 32 is such that it is for receiving a bottom 34 of one of the bottles 4. The retaining formations 32 are depressions in an upper surface 36 of the bottom flange 28. This upper surface 26 faces a lower surface of the upper flange 28 as can be appreciated from Figures 1 and 2.
The centre column 24 is adjustable in height in order to enable it to accommodate bottles 4 of different heights. More specifically, at any one time, all the bottles 4 will be of the same height. However different bottles for different beverages may be of different heights and thus the centre column 24 can be adjusted in height to accommodate whatever bottles need to be held by the apparatus 2. The centre column 24 may be telescopic in order to enable the height adjustment.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the centre column 24 is hollow. Thus the centre column 24 is adapted to receive the used caps 14 from the opened bottles 4.
As shown in Figure 2, the apparatus 2 may be provided with a lid 38.
The lid 38 may have a screw-threaded skirt portion 40 for screwing into a screw-threaded part 42 at the upper end of the hollow centre column 24. If a lid is provided, then a handle 44 may be attached to the lid 38. If a lid is not provided, then a handle 46 may alternatively be provided, with the handle 46 being connected to opposite sides of the upper flange 26 as shown in Figure 1.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown apparatus 48 for containing a plurality of the bottles 4. The apparatus 48 comprises a container portion 50. The container portion 50 comprises a ring member 52 having a plurality of retaining apertures 54. Each retaining aperture 54 is constructed for holding one of the bottles 4 by the neck part 8 of the bottle 4.
The apparatus 48 is such that an opener 56 is positioned at each retaining aperture 54 such that the bottles 4 are able to be opened as they are removed from their retaining apertures 54.
As can be appreciated from Figure 3, the ring member 52 is such that the bottles 4 hang from the ring member 52 during use of the apparatus 48.
The ring member 52 is a flat disc-like ring member 52. The apparatus 48 includes a handle 58 which is connected to opposite sides of the ring member 52.
Referring now to Figures 5 - 8, there is shown apparatus 60 having a container portion in the form of a carton 62. The carton 62 has only one opening 64. The opener 64 is in a wall part 66. The opener 64 is in the form of a part circular metal clip.
As shown in Figure 6, the carton 62 has a chamber 68 for receiving the caps 14 as they fall off the neck part 8 during opening of the bottle 4 with the opener 64.
As shown in Figure 8, the carton 62 has a perforated end 70 provided with a line of perforations 72. The perforated end 70 enables the carton 64 easily to be opened in order to dispense the bottles 4 from the carton 62.
Referring now to Figure 9 - 11, there is shown apparatus 74 for receiving the bottles 4. The apparatus 74 comprises a container portion 76 and an opener 78. The container portion 76 is in the form of a carton of the shape shown in Figure 9. A lip 80 forms a handle by which the apparatus 74 is able to be carried. The container portion 76 in the form of the carton has an upper part 82 having a plurality of retaining apertures 84. Each retaining aperture 84 is for receiving a neck part 8 of one of the bottles 4 to be held in the container portion 76. An elongate metal strip 86, as shown in Figure 10, extends around the apertures 84. Thus the metal strip 86 provides an opener 78 at each of the retaining apertures 84. The opener 78 is formed by opposing side edges 88, 90 of the metal strip 86.
The apparatus 74 is such that there is a single row of the retaining apertures as shown in Figure 9. One side of the container portion 76 is open at 92 for enabling bottles 4 to be gripped and removed from the container portion 76. The other side of the container portion 76 is closed and it forms a flat side which may bear printing or other information.
Referring now to Figure 12, there is shown apparatus 94 for containing a plurality of the bottles 4. The apparatus 94 is to some extent like two units of the apparatus 74 connected together back to back. It will be noticed that the apparatus 94 has partition walls 96 for defining compartments 98 for the bottles 4. The apparatus 94 is thus open on both sides for enabling the bottles 4 to be removed.
The apparatus 94 may be provided with a handle or it may be gripped underneath a lip 100, with the lip 100 forming the handle. There will be one of the lips 100 on either side of the apparatus 94.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the apparatus 2 may have differently shaped container portions, and differently constructed openers.
