Abstract

An article of clothing 10 is provided having a panel 11 to which has been applied a surface treatment agent which renders the panel 11 receptive to a washable ink. The treatment agent prevents the absorption of the ink into the fabric of the clothing 10 but allows the ink to dry on the panel 11. Also provided is a writing implement 12 containing a washable ink adapted for deposition on the surface-treated panel 11. The ink from the writing implement 12 when applied to the panel 11 forms a non-permanent mark 15 thereon 11. The mark 15 will be substantially wholly removed when the article 10 is next subjected to a conventional washing process.

Description

Article of Clothing and Writina lmDlement The present invention relates to
an article of clothing and a writing implement, and in particular an article of clothing adapted to have a non- permanent mark applied thereon by the writing implement.
There would be an advantage in having an article of clothing on to which a non-permanent mark may be applied. For example, Tee-shirts, sweatshirts or the hats of staff working in a bar or restaurant may have the latest or special offers temporarily displayed thereon. Alternatively, parents and children might enjoy clothing that may be drawn on, but where the markings may be simply removed without damaging the clothing or leaving it permanently marked.
There are at present several writing implements adapted for marking on an article of dothing, for example iron-on pens or permanent markers, or even so- * called washable ink markers. Attempting to wash a garment marked with * 15 washable ink usually leaves a residue which may take several washes fully to :: : remove. However, currently there are no writing implements and articles of clothing available in combination whereby a mark may be applied by the ::: : implement and which may subsequently be essentially wholly removed by a simple single conventional washing.
It is an aim of this invention to address the above problem. According to the present invention there is provided, in combination, an artide of clothing having a panel to which has been applied a surface treatment agent which renders the panel receptive to a washable ink by preventing the absorption of the ink into the fabric of the clothing but allowing the ink to dry on the panel, and a writing implement containing a washable ink adapted for deposition on the surface-treated panel, whereby the ink from the writing implement applied to the panel forms a non- permanent mark on the panel which will be substantially wholly removed when the article is next subjected to a conventional washing process.
As used hereinafter, the term mark" refers specifically to a deposit left on the panel by the ink, be it in the form of writing, drawings or other graphics.
The present invention finds utility because the mark on the panel may be simply removed. The mark may be removed by any conventional washing process such as hand washing or being washed in a washing machine. Of course, whilst washing removes the mark, it does not remove or in any way damage the panel, so that the article of clothing may be repeatedly reused.
Though many surface treatment agents may impart the required properties * to the panel of an article of clothing, it is preferred that the surface treatment agent * : 15 comprises a thermo-plastic resin applied to the surface of the item of dothing, the : : resin being sealed thereto by the application of heat. More preferably the surface * : treatment agent comprises a plastisol.
:1:: Any suitable method may be used to apply the agent to the article of Is..
* .. *1 clothing, but it is preferred that the agent is applied in liquid form by screen printing and is then fixed to the article of dothing by a heat sealing process.
Plastisol may be provided in a range of colours, and for the purposes of the present invention, any colour of plastisol may be used, with an appropriate selection typically being made on the basis of the underlying fabric of the garment.
The ink contained within the writing implement must have suitable properties for use in the present invention. Preferably chalk is applied to the article of clothing to form a layer of a colour that contrasts with that of the panel, to be non-permanently fixed to the panel. More preferably, the ink comprises powdered chalk suspended in a volatile liquid medium which is substantially non- reactive with the surface treatment agent. Still more preferably, the liquid medium is water.
The chalk suspended in the medium may be in a range of alternative colours, and indeed a number of different coloured writing implements may be supplied with the article of clothing, or separately therefrom. However, for maximum effect colour ink that sharply contrasts with the colour of the surface agent is preferred and particularly effective results can be obtained with a black panel on the article of clothing and white chalk in the pen.
* Whilst the ink may be applied to the article of clothing by means of any suitable writing implement, it is preferred that the writing implement resembles a * : conventional graphic pen containing the ink.
* * The article of dothing could feasibly be any to which the surface treatment can be applied, though more usually the article of clothing will be a Tee-shirt or sweatshirt, providing with a reasonably large surface area for the application of writing, graphics and so on.
The surface-treated panel could be of any size, from completely covering the article of clothing to consisting of a small patch on the front, depending upon the intended purpose of use. However, it is preferred that the panel is on at least one of the chest area and the back of the article of clothing.
In order that it may be better understood, one example of the present invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an article of clothing according to the present invention having a surface treated panel applied thereon; Figure 2 shows a writing implement according to the present invention; and Figure 3 shows the article of clothing of Figure 1 with a mark on the panel.
Referring to all three Figures, there is shown an article of clothing 10, in this embodiment a Tee-shirt having a plain front portion. Applied to the front portion of the article of clothing 10 is a substantially rectangular panel II. The panel has previously been screen printed with a liquid plastisol, and then cured by heat- sealing on to the front of the article of clothing 10. Figure 2 shows a writing is implement, generally indicated 12, comprising a conventional chalk-based pen.
The writing implement 12 comprises a wick 13 and a reservoir 14 containing the ink. The ink comprises a powdered chalk, which may be of any colour, suspended in a water-based medium. In use, the wick 13 draws up the medium, in which the chalk is suspended, from the reservoir 14.
In use, a user applies a mark, generally indicated 15, to the panel 11 on the article of clothing 10 by use of the writing implement 12. The ink is applied onto the panel 11 by the wick 13 of the writing implement 12, which continuously draws ink from the reservoir 14. As the water-based medium in the ink evaporates, a mark 15 in the form of a chalk deposit is left on panel 11. The mark 15 will be relatively fixed onto the panel 11, without binding with the surface treatment of the panel 11. The mark cannot be easily removed by brushing or by general wear of the article of clothing 10.
The mark 15 can be removed from the panel 11 by conventional washing processes, such as by washing in a washing machine or by hand washing. The panel 11 on the article of clothing 10 is adapted to be securely bound to the fabric of the clothing 10 and is therefore not affected even after repeated washing. The article of clothing 10 and writing implement 12 may be reused after washing. A user simply reapplies a mark 15 from the writing implement 12 to the panel 11 once the article of clothing 10 is dry.
