Detecting faults.-To ascertain the nature of sparking and other disturbances occurring in electric apparatus immersed in an insulating liquid, the device of the parent case is modified by the gases of decomposition formed by the sparking being collected in a graduated glass cylinder a. The cylinder a may be connected in a pipe b which is connected between a transformer and a rectifying vessel. An indication of the nature of the disturbances is given by the colour &c. of the gas. The Figure shows the gas-collecting apparatus combined with two switches c and i which may be connected in an alarm or cut-out circuit. The member c is a float which normally rests against an annular stop e, but gas bubbles rising in the cylinder a are trapped by the stop e causing liquid below the stop to be displaced and the float c to sink till a member carried by it bridges contacts f. The gas then escapes past the stop e and is collected in the top of the cylinder. The member i is also a float which is adapted to engage a contact k when the production of gas bubbles causes it to oscillate or when the liquid level in the pipe b sinks, i.e. through the transformer casing leaking.
