Abstract

A hands free jar opener is designed to hold a jar in a position such that a user of such a device has both hands free to clasp the body of the jar for easier opening. The device may comprise a steel ring having two lugs at either side for attachment to a convenient surface (e.g. underside of a kitchen cupboard), and a cut slot to allow a hinged lever to be attached. The lever may be sprung to the ring in order that its resting position is in tight contact with any jar that is placed inside the ring. To place a jar in the ring, the lever must be pulled away from its resting position, a jar may then be inserted into the ring and the lever released.

Description

Description
Hands Free Jar Opener The invention relates to the manner in which a screw top jar (typically glass, plastic or metal) is opened. It is envisioned that the Hands Free Jar opener would be used in a domestic setting. However, it may also serve a useful function in any environment where a container of this type needs to be opened on a regular basis.
In essence, the Hands Free Jar opener is designed such that the lid of the screw top jar is clasped by a sprung lever mechanism. This allows the user to be able to hold the body of the jar with both hand and so produce a more efficient pressure, thus enabling easier opening of the jar.
A particular group of people that would benefit from such a device is anyone with weakened uses of their hand (e.g. .disabled or elderly). This benefit would be derived from the capacity to grasp the body of the jar with both hands (as mentioned earlier).
The device would need to be made of steel due to the relatively large forces applied to both the device and the jar it contains.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing: As can be seen from figure 1, the device consists of a steel ring. This has two tugs at either side for attachment to a convenient surface (e.g. underside of a kitchen cupboard). At one side of the ring there is a cut-out slot. This allows for a hinged lever to be attached. This lever is sprung to the ring in order that its resting position is in tight contact with any jar that is placed inside the ring.
Thus, to place ajar in the device, the lever must be pulled away from its resting position. The jar is then inserted into the ring. When the lever is then released, it fits tightly around the jar, allowing for both hands to be placed on the jar prior to release of the lid. q 4..
