Abstract

A waste water heat exchanger comprises of an inner cylinder 3 through which waste water flows and an outer cylinder 1 surrounding the inner cylinder 3 and through which a liquid to be heated flows. Couplings 2 at each end of the inner cylinder 3 may be provided and may be connected to a waste water or sewage pipe and have an inner diameter the same size as an inner diameter of the inner cylinder 3. The outer cylinder 1 is closed at each end, sealed to and covers the inner cylinder 3 but does not cover the couplings 2, and may be supplied with liquid via pipes 4. The heat exchanger may be used above and below ground and its material of construction varied accordingly. The thermal conductivity of the material used for the manufacture of the heat exchanger may be of varied. Waste water may flow through the inner cylinder 3 unimpeded and in counter flow to the liquid flowing through outer cylinder 1. Inner cylinder 3 may have ribs inside and/or outside along its length to increase its surface area. Two or more heat exchangers in series may be used and the heat exchanger may be used horizontally or vertically.

Description

THERMAI TRANSFER DEVICE
Description.
This invention relates to a waste water system.
fn all current domestic and light industrial systems the wastewater and effluent generated is allowed to flow into the main wastewater and sewerage system, carrying with it some degree of heat.
This invention is designed to extract as much useful heat out of these waste liquids as possible without obstruction or slowing down the flow rate.
Detailed description.
Figure 1 shows a partially cutaway drawing of the device.
The device consists of two cylindrical chambers, one inside the other, marked I and 3.
The construction is such that there is a free flow path inside the inner cylinder from one end to the other. The inner diameter of the inner cylinder is always at least the same as the inner diameter of the couplings formed at each end, marked 2.
The couplings at each end are part of the inner cylinder and are so formed and sized to mate with the same size of wastewater / sewage pipe that they are to be used with. It follows therefore that whilst the device is designed with one purpose it can be made and used in different sizes.
The outer cylinder covers the inner cylinder except for the end couplings. The outer cylinder is closed at each end and sealed to the inner cylinder. The outer cylinder has an integral small bore pipe fitted at each end 4.These allow a flow of liquid inside the outer cylinder from one end to the other.
The device can be used both above ground and below ground, so the material used for its construction will vary according to its position in use.But mall cases the manufacture will always comply with current European standards
THERMAL TRANSFER DEVICE
The device may have its thermal conductivity enhanced by either suitably altering the composite material of manufacture, or by the inner cylinder having raised ribs along its length inside and/or outside to increase its surface area.

Claims (3)

THERMAL TRANSFER DEVICE CLAIMS
1 A double cylinder device inserted into existing or proposed wastewater or effluent systems in order to extract some of the latent heat contained in the wastewater or effluent.
2 A double cylinder device as in claim 1 where the wastewater or effluent passes unimpeded through the inner cylinder whilst passing heat to the extraction liquid passing through the outer cylinder.
3 A double cylinder device as in claim 2 which can be inserted into both above and below ground wastewater systems.
