Abstract

A simple wave powered water pump comprises two vertical cylinders, an inner cylinder 1 fixed to the seabed and provided with an inlet valve 2 in its base, and an outer cylinder 3 of slightly larger diameter and provided with an upper outlet valve 5 and a float 4. The up-and-down motion of the sea causes the outer cylinder 3 to slide up and down the inner cylinder 1 causing water to be sucked in through the inlet valve 2 and pressurised water to be forced out through the outlet valve 5 to drive a turbine. The inlet valve 2 may not be needed in deeper water.

Description

WAVE POWERED WATER PUMP FOR GENERATING ELECTRICITY. There must be many ways of 'getting power from the waves' this is one of my ideas. It utilises the up & down motion anything floating on the waves has. First, a long cylinder 1. is fixed in an upright position to the sea bed, with its base just above the sea bed. The cylinders top is left open but its base is closed off except for a inlet valve 2. Another slightly larger cylinder 3. is slip over cylinder 1. The bottom end of cylinder 3. has an integral float built around its base & a closed top except for an outlet valve 5. The top cylinder 3. should be able to slide up & down, with the motion of the sea, over cylinder 1. The lenths of the cylinders will be governed by tidal range, wave heights and "safe" cylinder overlaps. When the top cylinder 3. is lifter on its integral float 4. water is sucked in through valve 2, in base cylinder 1. When top cylinder 3. drops on a decending wave water contained within both cylinders is compressed & some is forced through valve 5. in top cylinder 3. This compressed water with other compressed water from other water pumps is then used to turn turbine which in turn is used to power dynamoes. Note in deeper water base cylinder 1. may not need inlet valve as pressure at base of cylinder will be greater.

Claims (2)

1. A wave powered pump for generating electricity, in which water is sucked from beneath the surface of the sea by means of a vertically mounted cylinder 1, with inlet valve
2., built into its base & fixed to the sea bed, with a slightly larger vertically mounted cylinder 3, with a floating section 4, built around its base & an exit valve built into its top 5, is slid over the lower virticaly mounted cylinder 1, so producing pressurised water to turn a turbine, which in turn will power an electricity generator.
