Abstract

A fencing support post (1) for wire mesh panel fencing comprising panels (2) with sets of horizontal wires (3) linked by upright wires (4) comprises a post of box section with two integral flanges (5) extending either side of the box section, each flange forming a securing point for one of the panels (2), the face (7) of the box section of the post between the flanges (5) being recessed to accommodate the upright wires (4) whilst allowing the panels (2) to lie flush with the flanges (5) of the post.

This invention relates to a fencing support post and to fencing incorporating same.
Wire mesh panel fencing is used in many and varied applications including perimeter security fencing for schools.
A typical flat panel fence system includes a wire mesh panel comprising a plurality of ridged or semi-ridged horizontal wires or bars extending parallel to and spaced from one another. These wires or bars are held in place by vertical wires or bars welded or otherwise secured at right angles to the spaced apart horizontal wires or bars. If the mesh panel is intended to form part of a security fencing system, then the upright wires or bars are all located on the same side of the horizontal wires or bars so as to be on the inside of the fencing panel surrounding the security area.
Traditionally, adjacent flat panels on such a construction have been connected together by overlapping adjacent extremities and clamping between a fencing post and a flat bar. Bolts are passed through the flat bar, through the gaps in the mesh in the two adjacent panels and through the fencing post from one side to the other, the bolts then being secured and the whole construction tightened by nuts.
With such a construction, it is quite difficult to lift the panels and to locate them together whilst the fixings are being inserted. Moreover, the nuts, being on the rear of the posts, could assist someone using them as a foot grip, which is not helpful in a security situation.
According to the present invention, there is provided a fencing support post for panel fencing, the post having a box section with two integral flanges aligned with and extending in opposite directions from one face of the box section, each flange forming a securing point for a respective fencing panel and the box section in the face between the two flanges being recessed to accommodate a structural element of each panel between the panel and the post whilst allowing the panels to lie flush with that face of the post.
The invention also extends to panel fencing including a fencing support post that is essentially as just defined.
The post may be constructed by punching, folding and welding a flat sheet of metal such as steel to create the required post profile.
The two fencing panels may each be secured by means of securing devices such as nuts and bolts, with the bolts extending through mesh spaces of the two panels and through the flanges of the support post, each flange being associated with a single mesh panel.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig 1 is a perspective view of a length of fencing support post, and Fig 2 is a plan view of the fencing support post shown in Fig 1, showing two wire or bar mesh panels ready to be secured to the fencing support post.
The drawings show a fencing support post 1 for open mesh steel panel fencing comprising panels 2 constructed as described above with a plurality of horizontal, spaced- apart wires or bars 3 linked together by spaced-apart wires or rods 4 running at right-angles to the wires or bars 3.
The fencing post 1 may be constructed by punching, folding and welding a flat sheet of steel to create the post profile illustrated and it will be seen that the post has substantially a box section with two integral flanges 5 aligned with and extending in opposite directions from one face 6 of the box section which, for all intents and purposes, can be considered as the front face of the support post to which the mesh fencing panels are secured.
Each flange 5 forms a securing point for a respective fencing panel 2 and it will be seen that the box section in the face 6 between the two flanges is inwardly recessed at 7 to accommodate structural elements of each panel, namely some of the wires or bars 4 between the respective panels 2 and the post 1 whilst allowing the two panels 2 to lie flush with that face 6 of the post.
Instead of passing bolts through a centrally-located clamping bar located on the opposite side of the panels to the post, which would then pass through the post to the rear face 8 of the post, as traditionally, it will be seen that, by virtue of the two flanges 5, apertures 9 are formed in each flange to receive securing devices S such as bolts 10, to which are attached security nuts 11.
It will be appreciated that the present construction obviates the need to provide a clamp bar and therefore allows profiled panels to be utilised, whilst the central recess 7 allows the mesh to sit neatly against the face 6 of the post without distorting the panels 2. Moreover, each panel 2 can be fitted independently to each other, which is helpful given the abovementioned difficulty in lifting the panels together whilst the fixings are being inserted.
Furthermore, especially in the case of a security fence, the fact that the nuts 11 are not provided on the rear face 8 of the post, as traditionally, means that they are less likely to assist someone who could use them as a foot grip.

Claims (10)

  1. Claims 1. A fencing support post for panel fencing, the post having a box
    section with two integral flanges aligned with and extending in opposite directions from one face of the box section, each flange forming a securing point for a respective fencing panel and the box section in the face between the two flanges being recessed to accommodate a structural element of each panel between the panel and the post whilst allowing the panels to lie flush with that face of the post.
  2. 2. A fencing supporting p9st according to claim 1, wherein the post has been constructed by punching, folding and welding a flat sheet of metal such as steel to create the required post profile.
  3. 3. A fencing supporting post according to claim 1 or 2, wherein each flange is provided with apertures to receive securing devices such as bolts, to which are attached security nuts to secure the fencing panels.
  4. 4. A fencing supporting post for panel fencing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  5. 5. Panel fencing including a fencing support post according to any one of the preceding claims.
  6. 6. Panel fencing according to claim 5 and including at least one fencing panel which has a mesh form.
  7. 7. Panel fencing according to claim 6, wherein the fencing panel is secured by means of securing devices such as nuts and bolts, with the bolts extending through mesh spaces of the panel and through one of the flanges of the support post.
  8. 8. Panel fencing according to claim 7, wherein a second mesh panel is provided, which is secured by securing devices to the other flange of the support post.
  9. 9. Panel fencing according to any one of claims 5 to 9 and comprising at least one wire mesh panel secured to the support post, the wire mesh panel comprising a first set of horizontal wires and a second set of upright wires, the upright wires crossing the horizontal wires and being joined at those points, one end of a set of horizontal wires overlapping one of the flanges of the fencing support post and the recessed face of the box section between the two flanges, thereby accommodating at least one of the upright wires of the set of upright wires between the set of horizontal wires and the recessed face.
  10. 10. Panel fencing, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
