Abstract
A picture frame assembly template unit 1, includes dovetail slides with wing nuts 2, and frame location rails 3, with slotted holes for two directional adjustments. The frame template unit may be used for holding picture frames in position whilst the glue on mitre joints is setting.
Description
I
Picture Frame Assembly Template This invention relates to a device for holding picture frames in position whilst the glue on the mitre joints is setting.
When picture frames are being glued together, corner mitre clamps are normally used.
However, the use of conventional mitre clamps can lead to a number of difficulties.
They do not allow for easy fine adjustment of the mitred corners, and for wider picture frames, more than one set of mitre clamps may be required.
To overcome these problems the present invention proposes a template with the means of locating sliding units to be adjusted and hold down a frame location rail by means of a wing nut.
The sliding units are dovetailed at their base and will fit and slide in dovetail grooves located in the template. At the top of the dovetail units will be a male threaded stud.
The frame location rails will have elongated slots to pass over the threaded studs and be held in place by means of wing nuts.
The template can be of any size to accommodate the overall dimensions of the picture frames to be made up.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 - shows the template feature 1, with the dovetailed shaped grooves located in the top surface, feature A. Figure 2 - shows the dovetailed sliding units with the threaded stud and hoJding down wing nut, feature B. Figure 3 - shows the arrangement of the frame location rails, feature C, with elongated slots, feature G and wing nuts feature B. In Figure 1, the template feature 1, consists of dovetailed shaped grooves running in pairs and in all four directions, feature A, to provide the facility to frame up pictures of a varying size. The template can be solid or have recessed panels on the underside to reduce weight, Figure 2, feature D. Counter sunk screw holes can be provided at the corners for holding down the template to a bench or table, feature E. The top surface of the template can be coloured with lines marked out at 10mm centres to assist with squareness of the picture frames, feature F. The dovetailed sliding units in Figure 2 fit into the dovetailed grooves in the template, feature A. The threaded stud projecting out of the top of the dovetail slide, feature B, will be high enough to take the frame location rail, feature C, and the wing nut, feature B. The frame location rails in Figure 3, feature C, are provided with elongated slots, feature G. The slots will allow adjustment in the direction of the dovetail grooves, feature A, and also at right angles to the grooves. Once in place, the wing nuts can be tightened to hold the frame location rails in position.
The tightening of the wing nuts against the frame location rails will bring the dovetailed slides up against the dovetailed grooves in the template, thus providing a firm fixing.
The frame location rails are positioned within the full length of each rail at one end in order round the template. This will allow full adjustment of the rails and permit the accommodation of various picture frame sizes.
Claims (7)
- Claims 1. A picture frame assembly template, together with the dovetailslides and frame location rails and wing nuts, will provide the facility to accommodate frames of various overall sizes and frame sections of any width and depth.
- 2. Once the picture frame mitres have been cut according to claim 1, the picture frames can be assembled on the template and held in place with the frame location rails.
- 3. A picture frame assembly template according to claim 2, with the wing nuts tightened, will hold the frame location rails firmly in place.
- 4. A picture frame assembly template according to claim 3, with the frame location rails firmly in place, will provide the opportunity for both diagonal and parallel dimensions of the assembled picture frame to be checked and the frame's squareness also checked.
- 5. A picture frame assembly template, according to claim 4, will, with the picture frame held in place, reveal any adjustments to the picture frame mitres that may be required.
- 6. Once the picture frame assembly is satisfactory according to claim 5, glue can be added to the mitre joints of the picture frames, then placed finally in the picture frame assembly template and left in place for the glue to set.
- 7. Once the glue has set, according to claim 6, the wing nuts can be unscrewed, the frame location rails removed, leaving the completed picture frame.
