Fibrous plastic compositions.-Wood shavings, sawdust, or other discrete spongy substances are agglomerated by means of a binder, e.g. tar, incorporated with a jelly, preferably prepared from an adhesive substance in the cold or without liquefaction of the jelly, the jelly being added to the material in a coarsely divided state. The mixture is kneaded or stirred and subjected before compression, either hot or cold, to a triturating, grinding, or crushing operation which may be effected in a machine comprising two cylinders or discs, covered with elastic material, rotating in opposite directions at different speeds. Albuminoid, cellulosic or amylaceous substances, gums, mucilages and their derivatives may be employed in preparing the jelly, and in addition to the binder there may be incorporated metallic powder, abrasives, colouring, proofing, or other agents. Wood fibre, hemp waste fabrics, paper, &c. may also be added. Reagents may be included to neutralize the unfavourable action of other of the constituents, e.g. a solvent of an essential oil, resins or creosote, which may be contained in the wood.
