Abstract
A Moses or like basket comprises at least one handle 14 able to move between an in use position and a rest position, the graspable part of the handle being closer to the main body of the basket in the rest position than the in use position. The Moses basket is preferably made of plastics material and the floor 20 is a lattice of six slats 26,28,30. The at least one handle is preferably retractable.
Description
Moses Basket
The invention relates to a Moses basket.
A conventional Moses basket is woven from palm leaves. The basket has a flat floor and a wall upstanding from the floor which flares upwardly. The wall has rounded ends and is straight at the sides. A handle is attached to each side wall near to the top of the side wall. Each handle is also made from palm leaves and is a simple loop. The loops are long so that if folded across the main body of the basket they touch or overlap one another so that the user can grasp both handles at the same time with one hand.
Because the handles can flop over the basket, an infant in the main body of the Moses basket can reach up and grasp the handles and pull themselves up by the handle, risking overturning the basket. Moses baskets can be placed on the floor, but can also be placed on a stand, which is typically a light wooden stand with scissor connected legs. A baby can be seriously hurt by falling from a Moses basket on a stand. Also, because the handles are long they can catch on things. For example, an adult leaning over the basket might catch the handle on a button, dangling necklace or their watch and accidentally tilt or overturn the basket when straightening up.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a Moses basket, the basket comprising a main body to receive a baby, and at least one handle for lifting the basket, the or each handle including a graspable part to be grasped by a user to lift the basket, wherein the basket further includes means permitting movement of the graspable part between a use position and a basic position in which the graspable part lies closer to the main body than in the use position.
In this way, the or each handle of the Moses basket can be moved out of the way of a baby so that it is no longer able to grasp the handle and so that the or each handle is less likely to become caught on something.
The or each handle may extend from the side wall of the main body of the basket. Preferably, in the use position, the graspable part is further from the top of the side wall of the main body of the basket than in the basic position. The graspable part may be adjacent to the top edge of the side wall of the main body in the basic position.
The graspable part of the or each handle may be rigid and preferably the or each handle is rigid. The or each handle may be made from plastics material. The graspable part of the or each handle may be permitted to move in any suitable manner but in a preferred embodiment, the or each handle is movable by translation. The or each handle may be in the form of an inverted U-shape. The arms of the or each handle may be received in receiving means so that the arms are slidable in the receiving means to permit the movement of the graspable part between the use position and basic position. The receiving means is preferably provided on the side wall of the main body and may be provided inside the main body. The or each receiving means may define a tube to receive part of the handle. At least part of the tube may be defined by part of the wall of the main body of the Moses basket.
Stop means is preferably provided to prevent the handles from sliding out of the receiving means. The handle may include a slot and a stop member fast with the main body of the basket may be received in the slot so that the end of the slot engages the stop member to limit the travel of the handle.
Preferably the Moses basket has two handles.
The main body of the basket may be made of any suitable material and may be made from plastics material. The main body of the basket may be integral and may be a one piece plastics moulding.
The floor of the basket may be a continuous web but preferably is a perforated web and may take the form of a lattice. Preferably, the lattice has one, two or three longitudinal slats and two, three, four, five or six cross slats. In this way, air can pass through the floor of the Moses basket to cool the infant and ensure fresh air reaches the infant.
Each slat may be no more than 100mm wide and preferably is 50mm wide or less. This ensures plenty of fresh air can pass through.
Preferably at least 40% of the area of the floor of the basket is open for passage of air therethrough, more preferably at least 50%, most preferably at least 55%. Lack of air circulation is a potential factor in cot death. The floor of the basket may include no more than 25 openings for passage of air therethrough, preferably no more than 20 openings, more preferably no more than 15 openings.
Where a mattress is used this will generally be made of foam and hence will allow air to pass through it.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a Moses basket with retractable handles.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a Moses basket having a floor consisting of one, two or three longitudinal slats and two, three, four, five or six cross slats.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a Moses basket having a floor with openings for passage of air therethrough, the openings representing at least 40% of the area of the floor.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided the combination of a Moses basket as claimed in any preceding claim and a mattress to cover the floor thereof for a baby to sleep on.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from one side of a Moses basket in the embodiment of the invention showing one handle extended and one handle retracted; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the Moses basket of Figure 1 from the other side showing one part in phantom; Figure 3 is an end elevation of the Moses basket of Figure 1; Figure 4 is an underneath plan view of the Moses basket of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a perspective view of the handle of the Moses basket of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the handle of Figure 5; Figure 7 is a perspective view of a channel member of the Moses basket of Figure 1 from the front;Figure 8 is a perspective view from the rear of the channel member of Figure 7; and Figure 9 is a perspective detail fragmentary view of the wall of the Moses basket of Figure 1.
The Moses basket 10 of the embodiment of the invention comprises a main body 12 to receive a baby and two handles 14 which are received in channel members 16 carried by the side walls 18 of the main body 12.
The main body 12 of the Moses basket 10 has generally the same shape as a conventional woven Moses basket. Thus, the Moses basket 10 has a planar floor 20 with a wall 22 extending upwardly and flaring outwardly from the floor 20. The wall 22 consists of two longitudinal flat side walls 18 and two curved end walls 24. The floor 20 is in the form of a rectangular lattice having two longitudinal slats 26 and four cross slats 28, 30. The central two cross slats 30 are broader that the other slats 26, 28.
Each handle 14 of the Moses basket 10 is generally in the form of an inverted U-shape, as shown in Figure 5, and consists of two arms 32 linked by a graspable part 34. The arms 32 are parallel and each arm 32 is parallel sided and includes a central longitudinal slot 36. The graspable part 34 is curved upwardly slightly towards the centre and includes a pair of ribs 38 on each side. Each arm 32 is slidably received in a channel defined between the side wall 18 and a channel member 16.
Each channel member 16 extends over the height of the side wall 18 and is generally flat with raised sides to form a shallow channel. Each member 16 has a short tongue 46 at the lower end which is received in a slot 44 at the end of one of the broad cross slats 30. Each member 16 is attached to the side wall 18 by two screws 50, 52 received in apertures 54, 56. The upper aperture 54 is close to the upper edge 58 of the member 16 while the lower aperture 56 is spaced by a greater distance from the floor 20 of the Moses basket 10. The slot 36 in each arm 32 receives the upper screw 50 but not the lower screw 52, as shown in Figure 2 where one channel member 16 is shown in phantom. In this way the abutment between the screw 50 and the lower end 60 of the slot 36 retains the handle 14 to the main body 12 of the Moses basket 10.
The wall 22 of the Moses basket contains vertically spaced rows of apertures 62. Each aperture 62 is in the form of a rectangle with a cut-off corner and the edges of the apertures are chamfered as shown in Figure 9.
In use, a known foam mattress (not shown) is placed in the Moses basket 10 to lie on the slats 26, 28, 30 of the floor 20 and the baby is placed on the mattress in the Moses basket 10. The handles 14 can be pushed down so that the arms 32 are received in the members 16 and the graspable part 34 of each handle 14 lies just above the top edge 64 of each side wall 18 as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. In this way, the handles 14 cannot be accidentally caught by the hand or clothing of a passing person or of someone bending over the basket looking at the baby. Also, each handle 14 is at the side of the Moses basket 10 rather than flopping over the top of it so it is much more difficult for a child to grab it. Also, as the majority of the handle 14 is retracted and hidden behind the members 16, only a small proportion of the handle 14 is available to be grasped by the baby. This is therefore a much safer arrangement than the known Moses basket.
When it is desired to lift up the Moses basket 10, the handles 14 can be extended by grasping the graspable part 34 and pulling them upwards. The Moses basket 10 can then be carried either using two hands, one hand holding each handle 14, or by pulling the graspable parts 34 of the handles 14 together, which is enabled by flexing of the side walls 18 with respect to the floor 20 so that the Moses basket 10 can be lifted with one hand through both handles 14.
As the Moses basket 10 is made of plastic it is easier to clean and can be disinfected.
The slats 26, 28, 30 leave 15 holes between them which represent about 55% of the total area of the floor 20 of the Moses basket 10. This large open area, very significantly larger than in a conventional basket woven from palm leaves, enables much more air to pass through to cool an infant in the basket and ensure the infant has fresh air to breathe.
The screws 50, 52 securing the channel members 16 to the side wall 18 may be replaced in another embodiment by rivets which may be metal, mechanically clinched or plastic ultrasonically welded rivets.
